ESPN’s Kevin Weekes is reporting the Capitals are trading Marcus Johansson to the Minnesota Wild for a third-round draft pick in the 2024 draft. The Washington Post has since confirmed the trade.

The Washington Post has confirmed.

The Capitals re-signed Johansson to a one-year, $1.1 million contract on July 13. The Capitals acquired Johansson at the 2022 NHL trade deadline from the Seattle Kraken for Daniel Sprong, their fourth-round pick in 2022 and their sixth-round pick in 2023.

Johansson began his NHL career with the Capitals in 2010 and player for seven years before being traded to the New Jersey Devils on July 2, 2017. Johansson played two seasons with the Devils before being traded to the Boston Bruins at the 2019 trade deadline.

Johansson then signed with the Minnesota Wild for the 2020-21 season, before moving on to the Seattle Kraken for their inaugural season.

Not a bad return I suppose. We gave up a 4th, 6th and Daniel Sprong to get him last year. I remember everyone trashing the decision to resign him, and I could be wrong I might be one of the few who actually supported it. He’s not the same as he was but he provided solid depth and flexibility and showed flashes of his old self this year. But he’s 32 and not a part of this teams future. I’m glad this team is finally seeing reason and is selling at the deadline. Time to actually invest in our youth. Still, I got nothing but appreciation for MoJo’s years of service. Wish him the best in Minnesota!
I had someone telling me the Capitals were going to waive Mojo, before the season started, in favor of Protas. Needless to say, that didn’t happen, because you don’t sign a player as a UFA, just to waive him. He’s a useful depth guy, and provided value for his salary. But the team needs to dump as many UFAs as possible.
I can’t remember; why didn’t we like Daniel Sprong?

He wasn’t on the PP. He wasn’t on the PK. He could score goals, but had little defensive skill. He was a one trick pony on a team in need of players who could do multiple things. Johansson was the perfect replacement. I’m sad to see him go. I understand the move, but he was a solid player for us and showed it more this year than last. Whether playing 2nd or 3rd line or even 4th line, he was productive. Great PKer. He improved our PP. Great return from Sprong. I would have liked to see a 2nd rd pick instead, but I’ll settle sadly with the 3rd rd. Based on this years production, Minnesota won that trade, but who knows how long he could be this productive, and if Minnesota will use him in the same way.
Mojo on the go go
It feels like every aspect of this season has been so chaotic. Maybe unpopular opinion but the more I see everyone stocking up like mad in the East, the more comfortable I am with the Caps hitting the reset button instead. Serendipity was not on Washington’s side this year.
The 3rd round pick is in 2024. The bad news is the Caps are back to only 5 picks in this year’s draft, with the trade of the Boston #1 for Sandin. The good news is we have 8 picks in next year’s draft, including 3 3rd rounders
Ill admit I was not happy with the MoJo signing but early in the year he surprised me. Yes now is the time to trade him and getting a 3rd is reasonable. Now who do they bring up to replace him….Snively or no one and just play Protas or Smith. Kinda surprised that there are no takers or calls on Eller or Smith yet; guess that hang up is salary.
