The Washington Capitals announced on Sunday that they have recalled defenseman Dylan McIlrath from Hershey and re-assigned forward Joe Snively to Hershey.

The Washington Capitals, the NHL affiliate of the Hershey Bears, announced today that the club has recalled defenseman Dylan McIlrath and loaned forward Joe Snively to the Bears. The announcements were made by Washington senior vice president Brian MacLellan.
McIlrath, 30, made his Washington debut on Thursday versus the Florida Panthers. He has ten assists in 44 games this season for Hershey, serving as the club’s captain. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native is in his second season with Hershey, posting 10 points (4g, 6a) over 74 games in 2021-22, and also collecting 99 penalty minutes.
He’s appeared in 67 career NHL games with the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Detroit Red Wings, and Capitals scoring five points (3g, 2a) and registering 121 penalty minutes. McIlrath was selected in the first round (10th overall) by the New York Rangers in the 2010 NHL Draft.
Snively, 27, has collected eight points (5g, 3a) in 13 games with the Bears this season. Snively recorded 38 points (15g, 23a) in 35 games with Hershey in 2021-22 and ranked third on the team in points and fourth in goals.
With Washington, Snively has scored three points (1g, 2a ) over eight games this season. The Herndon, Virginia, native became the first Virginia-born player to play for the Capitals in franchise history last season.
The Bears return to action this afternoon in the final game of a two-game set against the Checkers in Charlotte. Puck drop is set for 4PM.
The Capitals return to action on Tuesday when they host the Detroit Red Wings at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is set for 7PM.
Snively was involved in both goals in the one game he played (1g, 1a) and what did that earn him? A return trip to Hershey.

My read, the Capitals don’t feel he’s ready for a full-time roll. Whether McIlrath provides a better alternative or not is debatable. Lavi prefers the seasoned vets.
Maybe Caps are making a trade of some sort soon and McIlrath is somehow directly or indirectly involved.

I’d be shocked if McIlrath is traded. He has zero trade value.
I’d be less shocked if Alexeev was traded.
Sorry, I’ll elaborate a bit. I would maybe see the move as the fact that the Caps, if in sellers mode, would trade either Jensen or TVR and be needing to look at McIlrath again to see if he could handle an rhd job for the rest of the season.
That’s fair, but the Caps aren’t selling yet (if at all). I also don’t think McIlrath is seriously considered an NHL player anymore.
Is Hershey short of healthy forwards right now?
Or maybe they want Snively playing more often than he will in DC?
Or maybe the coaches watched the Caps defense in last night’s game and decided they needed McIlrath’s defensive capabilities?

Clay let in 3 of 26 as the Rays offensive drought continues, today no goals. Bear had 3 sog, Has 1, Maass 0. Since Turnbull and O’Neil left for greener pastures, Rays offense has been very poor. Bear is now the leader in goals, assists, and points, but even his production is weak. They swapped an F and a D between roster and reserve. Yesterday they added two and deleted three. Day before they added 2 and deleted 1. Rough times in North Charleston.
Snively going to Hershey tells me Dowd is ready to come back. Adding Mcllrath is interesting since we already have 7 D on the roster. My gut tells me GMBM is seeing what he has in him before the deadline. either as a trade chip, someone that fills a roll with out making a deal or as a replacement for another D that is on the roster that will be moved.
