The Winnipeg Jets placed former Washington Capitals left-wing Axel Jonsson-Fjallby on waivers on Monday afternoon.
Jets head coach Rick Bowness said the move to waive the forward was made to create a roster spot for Dylan DeMelo to return Tuesday against the Seattle Kraken. Bowness added he was hopeful Jonsson-Fjallby would clear and remain with the Jets.

After Winnipeg claimed the 25-year-old on October 10, he has recorded four goals, 11 points, and a 48.18% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 45 games this season. Jonsson-Fjallby also averaged 53 seconds on the team’s penalty kill (eighth among team forwards), which currently ranks second in the league with a 83.7% efficiency.
Jonsson-Fjallby made his NHL debut with Washington last season and finished his rookie campaign with two goals and four points.
The Buffalo Sabres claimed him on waivers on October 4, 2021 before Washington got him back a week later.
The Stockholm native was selected 147th overall in 2016 by Washington and also tallied 40 goals and 65 points in 152 games over four seasons with the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

Can you claim him and send him down? I thought you had to add them to the NHL roster to claim him and would need to waive him again to send him down.

Question is… can he score goals better than any of our current forwards as the vast majority of them are in a scoring slump.
My understanding is that if a team has waived a player once, they don’t need do it again a second time. Since they lost him once already this year, they should be able to send him down this time, without waivers.
I could be wrong though. Waivers is complicated
Waiver rules continue to baffle me.
I did some further research on the topic, and I think I found out the answer. If the Caps put a claim on him, and NO OTHER team does, the Caps can send him down to Hershey, without rewaiving him. I guess the rule says, in plain English, all of the teams but one have said no to him, so we don’t need to repeat the process. If however, a team above the Caps in the standings put in a claim also, then that team is again eligible to put in the claim, should the Caps decide to send him down.
I think this is true, but I have to admit my sources are internet message boards. Pretty well informed sources though.
Time to start clearing cap space and players for next season. Put in a claim for AJF and then waive either NAK or MOJO. If he is claimed by Wash he has to be placed on the roster so someone has to go. Unless you can trade MOJO or NAK in the next few hours and receive a low pick for them.
Mojo is 2nd on the team in goals. They won’t waive him.

If he can be claimed and then sent to sent outright to Hershey no problem. However if he has to be kept on the roster then logically one would look at the roster and look for UFA players of age to waive as probably not going to be resigned next year. If the caps can claim him and have to keep him; OH all mighty Kim who would you waive?

Honestly I dont think that Either Eller or Mantha are wanted by other teams. Would be nice to trade Either of them but with their performance here who would want them?
Also, by my research, the Caps, if they reclaim AJF, don’t have to put him on waivers to send him down. The rule says, not 100% sure of this, but reasonably sure, that if a player is only claimed by 1 team, they don’t have to rewaive him to send him down. And I doubt there’ll be a stampede to claim AJF

Not quite how it works. At the beginning of a season, all of the players in training camp, with NHL contracts, are on the NHL roster. To be sent down, all of them have to be waived, unless they’re ineligible due to age. It’s a never ending process, and more than one player has spent his career yo-yoing between The Show and The A.
I’d pick Axl up and send him to Hershey. He’s a reasonably good PKer and 4th liner. He even has some goal scoring potential. It takes many guys awhile to figure out the NHL. Axl is a solid option/insurance policy for next year.
I always thought he was the replacement for Hagelin.
I’d hope they can claim him and send him to Hershey. He would be a great add for Hershey and their championship run this spring. Then in September, he can join the Caps for training camp to try and make the big club for next season. No harm, no foul.
I’ll say, Caps fans do love their 4th liners…!!! Wave better players than him for him. Lets see, while young and fast he still can’t produce more that old Caps…sounds like a great pick up…
Wake me up when he is outscoring any of our current Caps (that have played similar amount of games…he has only outscored 2 of our defensemen, but at least he can beat them in a race…How many players can we play on the 4th line next year?? Hopefully it is 9 to keepp this group happy.
@Horn73 Love it! It’s crazy to me that so many people on here Love them some 4th Liners. I guess people don’t realize that he has been put on waivers by 3 different NHL teams in a span of two years. It’s not like he has been turning heads since we put him and Leasson on waivers at the start of the year.
And that shows the limited view you have of how an NHL organization works, and also that you can’t read. Most people here are in favor of picking him up for Hershey.
Having 50 contracts (which is the maximum allowable under the CBA) isn’t just to have players for your NHL team, it’s also to stock your AHL and, to a lesser extent, ECHL team. The idea is to create competition for jobs all thru your organization. The kids in the ECHL should be pushing the kids in the AHL, and the AHL kids should be pushing the NHLers. Does your tiny mind get that? Or do you need my help some more?
The problem here is that Laviolette is giving the jobs straight out to the NHL vets. And don’t start with your “but Protas has played blah blah games, and so has McMichael” whine. When they did dress, they hardly played at all. A young player can’t hope to unseat a vet if he’s getting 6-7 minutes a night.

Yep, not enough competition in Hershey and yeah, I could see the same post after post to claim him and put him in Hershey. Hershey is in great shape and AJB would be lucky to be a 4th liner there now. Not the kind of competition they need. Maybe next year, certainly no room this year. 20 comments about picking up a guy for Hershey that can.
