The Washington Capitals announced that they have re-signed forward Sonny Milano to a three-year deal, with an annual average value of $1.9 million.
The deal, which extends Milano through the 2025-26 season, totals $5.7 million.

Additionally, the deal will pay Milano $2.35 million in the first year of the deal, $1.9 million the second, and $1.45 million in the final year; the deal does not contain any trade protections.

Initially signed to a one-year deal shortly after the beginning of the season after going un-signed by the Anaheim Ducks, and released from a professional tryout offer (PTO) with the Calgary Flames, the former first-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets has recorded eight goals and 22 Points in 40 Games Played with Washington.
The signing of Milano, 26, comes days after the club announced a five-year contract for Center Dylan Strome, keeping two of General Manager Brian MacLellan’s more shrewd moves in free agency this season around for the foreseeable future.
In 66 Games Played last season with the Ducks, Milano recorded a career-best 20 Assists and 34 Points, while matching his career-high in Goals with 14. In 237 NHL Games Played with Columbus, Anaheim, and Washington, the Massapequa, New York native has recorded 103 Points (44 G, 59 A).

Agree. More bad news for players in Hershey, but…
Is something in the offing here? Why get these extensions signed now? Trade? Or maybe they’re trying to settle cap space, to sign a big extension, like Orlov? Inquiring minds want to know!
Also easier to trade a player under contract and receive more for him than a UFA or RFA. Not saying that either player recently signed will or should be traded but there are several on the roster who would be easier to trade if they has several more years, for example Orlov, Jensen and maybe Hathaway or Gustafsson. Just saying.
If they won’t sign extension before deadline they need to be traded
I like both the Milano and Strome signings. Good NHL talent at 26 and 25 years old.
I think Sheary will be an interesting decision. So good for us, but we have some Bears I’d like to see graduate. I love Hath but think we need to move on although 4RW isn’t as contested right now with players from Hershey. Sutter, Rybinski, Pilon would be most likely To push for that spot.
Good signing, as long as he continues to play hard. He was fighting for a contract to this point. Ok, he’s got one.
I fail to see the attraction. He makes Marcus look like a heavyweight.
Good signing. Hopefully the GM wont resign MoJo and saddle the new HC with a lot of older players when the team should be rebuilding. The signing of Strome and Milano (wonder if his nickname could be Cookie, after the Milano cookie?) may seem bad for the guys in Hershey however I think it is good as it means that either other forwards are not going to be resigned and give the young guys a shot or like usual the Caps will trade the young guys for older more experienced and more expensive guys just to get Ovie a record; look and act like they are still a Cup playoff team and satisfy the ego of a very sad and truly pathetic owner.
I still think that if Lavi isn’t here next year it will be because he chose not to re-sign, not the Caps management.
Sad but I agree as after the debacle with Trotz an the big flub with Reardon I think that Ted has one thing on his mind and that is get Ovie the record. And settling for a average team can do that where a rebuild will probably not. So thanks to the want of a record, which is nice but meaningless, the owner is willing to let young players go to other teams to feed his ego!

I mean someone on post below suggested Protas for 2nd line next year…that poster must have been high – 2nd line??? He has what, 5 goals between Caps and Bears…Protas 4th like over Beck, okay, 2nd line – if he is 2nd line next year to start the Caps are in trouble.
CMM and LaPierre playing another full year at Hershey next year would not be bad for the Caps – they aren’t exactly tearing it up down there….they are having good solid years, nothing that infers they need to be in the show next season.
You posters that want to rebuild, but then don’t want patience, you’d rather rush kids up because of what they did in Juniors maybe…They should play for the Caps when they can take someone’s spot, not given one.
I think Protas, who is a natural C-man, has been playing out of position all year in washington. He very well could be 2nd line material at the C anywhere fro the 2nd to the 4th line. Sad to say this but the Caps have enough players on the team and in Hershey to fill 4 or 5 4th lines.
Rush young players, mostly no but I see nothing wrong with bringing them up and letting them play a few games to get the feel of the NHL and see where they need to put in more work.
CMM and HL should be here 24/25 as the starting C’s on the 2nd to the 4th line. CMM is a perfect example of a player who looked good in Hershey but when brought up was played out of position and so little that he lost all confidence in himself. Not all players have the mental fortitude to play W or C and on the 2nd or 3rd or 4th line.
I dont mind resigning Milano but would like to see them resign Sheary. Also if they are going to bring up a young guy…..play him, dont bring him up just to sit the bench. Another reason why you dont want the HC back next year or any year after thah especially since a rebuild will be necessary as soon as the owners ego is satisfied by Ovie getting a record.
Too many people point to poor prospect performance without giving Lavi credit for that poor performance. Sitting players and then playing them in other positions not to mention different linemates is not the way to get their best performance. A teacher can set up students to succeed and can also set up students to fail. Lavi is not a good teacher.
@hockeydruid wait wait wait you want the caps to resign a 30 year old Connor Sheary but want the young prospects to play in the NHL?? Isn’t that hypocritical?? I love Sheary don’t get me wrong but if you are complaining about the young prospects not getting a shot at playing but then want them to resign Sheary makes no sense at all. The fact that you are complaining about Ted helping the only Captain in Caps history to hoist the stanley cup chase down the one record nobody thought would ever be broken is hysterical. We as caps fans are so lucky to be watching history and the fact that this organization has been competitive year in and year out for 10+ years is pretty insane as well. Go look at other teams the past ten years nobody besides Pittsburgh has made the playoffs more consistently than the Caps and Pens. I will take that any given day over say the Coyotes or Sabers or heck Senators or Panthers for that matter who had the best record in the league last year and are now on the outside looking in or even the Islanders who made it to back to back Eastern Conference Finals but yet never won the cup and then missed the playoffs the following year and are currently on the outside looking in this year.
I would like Sheary resigned to a 1 year deal as he is a good agitator and has something to teach the younger players. Basically we lost we lost AJF and kept MoJo for the same salary and MoJo has scored more this year however AJF has more of an upside. So in this case they kept a player for today not for tomorrow. Sheary falls into the category. I never said anything about winning in 2018, what bothers me is the desire for a record that is just a record not a Cup. A player record is something that is nice to have but should NOT be the reason that you put a team on the ice and make trades or sign players and should never be a team goal!! Sad but this team is NOT a legit threat to win the Cup or even win in the first round of the playoffs so what does the ego driven money hungry owner do, push the idea of breaking a player record. All good but truly not important in the grand scheme of getting a Cup. Do you remember many years back when this same owner marketed the team as Come see the Flyers play or the Bruins or other teams because the draw was so bad? Same now with the constant marketing of breaking a player record. IMHO it is nice to keep older players however it is also detrimental to what should be the team goal winning a Cup. Here is a great example: Orlov is a good D-man and also a UFA this year and he is 31. Should he be resigned and at what price? I think at his age he may be looking at his last contract and want to finish with a 6-8year dead with a salary of $8-$8.5 a year. Should the Caps resign him or trade him now and receive, hopefully, a high pick and or prospects? Because of the current salary structure on this team and probably not being able to move Mantha without including one or more assets (picks or players) there is no way they should sign Orlov. Can they move Carlson…NO due to salary and injury. Does anyone really want Eller, that is unknown and what you will get for him is not going to shake up anything. IF someone wanted Wilson would they trade him? How about Kuzy? I would love ti if someone would make a decent offer for Oshie and be able to unload his salary and increased injury time due to age and how he plays.The What you are looking at is a team that is basically made up of some good old high priced players, some young unproven players and many players who are 4th line material at this point in their career and little secondary scoring and a PP that has not changed in years. Currently there are only 8 players on this team from the Cup team of 2018 so there has been a lot of turnover however the turnover has also resulted in players with higher salaries (except Ovie who went for 10M to 9.5 mil? but has also resulted in a lot of players on this team playing on lines that are above their pay grade. And that is why you have a mediocre team that will not win in the playoffs. And you want to complain about resigning one 30 year old to help teach the younger players rather than worrying about how to get rid of deadwood on the team or how to obtain more and higher draft picks to improve this team so that they can move past the first round of the playoffs and be relevant! I also love that both of these extensions this week were front end loaded, meaning both players make their most money next year which obviously leaves room for some big signings down the road. Like for Orlov, maybe really good money next year for him, but it builds to even more each year because at the end of his contract there will be no others. I think to keep Orlov GM will have to give more years to be able to get him the money he’ll want, just like with what he had to do with Oshi – everyone knew that was too much term for oshi, but had to go that long to get him the dollars.
I agree on your summation of what Orlov will want and I think it will be a 5-7 year deal for $8 to $8.5 a year. As he is 31 this will be his last and BIG payday. Luckily I don’t foresee n injury issue for Orlov like Oshie has had the past years. However there are still 2 years on what has become a bad contract for Oshie due to injuries. Unless Backy were to retire I would think that Orlov’s contract will be out of reach. That is unless Backy retires and you can trade Mantha and Oshie.
