The Washington Capitals announced on Friday morning that they have re-signed Capitals forward Dylan Strome to a five-year contract extension at five million per year. Strome, 25, has recorded 36 points (11g, 25a) in 52 games with Washington this season.

The Washington Capitals have re-signed center Dylan Strome to a five-year contract extension, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Strome’s contract will carry an average annual value of $5.0 million.
“Dylan is an intelligent and skilled center and has been a great addition to our organization,” said MacLellan. “We are pleased to sign him to a long-term contract. We feel his skill set is a great fit for our team as he enters the prime years of his career at an important position.”
Strome, 25, has recorded 36 points (11g, 25a) in 52 games with Washington this season. The 6’3″, 200-pound forward ranks second on the Capitals in assists, third in points and power-play points (14) and fourth in goals. Strome, who also ranks fourth among Capitals forwards in time on ice per game (16:42), is on pace to record 56 points this season.

The Mississauga, Ontario native recorded 48 points (22g, 26a) in 69 games with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2021-22. Strome established single-season career highs in goals and games played and averaged a career-high 17:26 of ice time per game last season. Strome ranked third on the team in goals and fourth in assists and points.
Originally drafted by the Arizona Coyotes with the third overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, Strome recorded a career-high 57 points (20g, 37a) in 78 games with Arizona and Chicago in 2018-19. Strome averaged 0.68 points per game in parts of four seasons with Chicago from 2018-19 to 2021-22, which ranked fifth on the team in that span.
In 325 career NHL games with Washington, Arizona and Chicago, Strome has recorded 206 points (78g, 128a).
Strome signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Capitals last offseason after the Chicago Blackhawks declined to make him a qualifying offer.

The Capitals now have centers Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nic Dowd signed through 2024-25, and Dylan Strome signed through 2027-28.

Good signing at a good number! He’s at least a 1 for 1 replacement for Eller (who I’ll miss, but business is business) at a better number, and really solidifies the middle of the ice going forward! Well done GMBM!

That really depends on what they do over the next month, both on the ice and off.
If they get hot and climb the standings, then I could see them trading one of the kid Cs along with a surplus vet or two (I’m thinking 20 and 39 for sure, like everybody else) for some quality D help.
If they suck coming up to the trade deadline and drop ~8-10 points or more out of a playoff spot, then does management go into full “tank for Bedard” mode and trade everybody on an expiring contract, plus a couple of under-performers like 39? If so, then there will plenty of opportunities for McMichael, Lapierre, Frank, etc. to make the case for themselves in the last month or so of the season. Hershey would go from a top AHL team to a bottom one, but does anybody outside of Central PA care?
If they are in purgatory, just in or out of the last playoff spot, they’ll probably do something stupid like trade one of the kids and Eller for a marginal D rental, which will not win them a Cup this year, and will hurt their chances in the future.
While I hope the first scenario comes true, it isn’t likely given the way they’ve played most of the season (They’re basically a sub-.500 team that has a winning record only because they had one great month out of 4+ this season). If that’s the case I actually hope they suck for the next four weeks, and tank for Bedard. Even if they don’t get the first pick, the higher up they get in the draft order the better chance they have of getting 2-3 quality players who might make a difference in 3 years or so.
Of course tanking also means cleaning house behind the bench, which I think is likely anyway. It is pretty clear at this point that this group of players does not play Laviolette’s system very well on a consistent basis. Could be the players, could be the system, could be both. I’m kinda thinking it’s both, but it’s always easier to fire the coach, and the core of this team isn’t going anywhere no matter what (unless Oshie and/or Backstrom go on forever IR due to injuries.. I just don’t think that’s going to happen)…
Personally, I’d love a complete tank, but judging by remarks from Leonsis, it ain’t gonna happen. There’s a nice little consolation prize for those teams who miss out on Bedard, in the form of a Russian youngster named Matvei Michkov. This kid is a Patrick Kane comparable, would look great on the other side (he’s a left shooting, right wing) from Miroshnichenko, and being a slippery smooth playmaker, would compliment Miro’s game nicely.
But like I said, not likely to happen. Get used to 2 or 3 more years of mediocrity, till Ovi breaks the goal record.

Sad leonis and his ego are the worst thing for this tea,. Just like Steinbrenner back in the day for the Yankees except he doesnt have the money to but championships like Steinbrenner did. Ted should go to his box and keep his mouth shut about the team except to say good things to the media. And mediocrity is not here for 2-3 years but for about 7-8 years as this team is not now or anytime in the next decade going to make a legit run or the Cup. And the consolation prize that you speak of will not be a Cap unless the mortgage their future and then still not sure that the GM and owner have the combined IQ to draft him.
And they both won championships.

If you want to be the middle part of a good, friendly ECHL-AHL-NHL tree, then you re-sign with the Caps and spend your time in the lower ranks. If you want to play NHL hockey and truly believe that you can (whether realistic or not) you go looking for an organization where you will have a better chance to succeed or fail.
Strome is a solid 2C. Looks to have a good character and plays fairly well with Ovie. I expect it will mean Connor McMichael and/or Hendrix Lapierre get traded. None of these players look like a 1C and if Strome is the 2C then there is no place for the others. 5 mill per year for Strome is fair. Could Connor McMichael have provided the same production at a fraction of that cap hit? BMac says no!

I don’t agree. Center is a good position to have depth. I refer you to the 2009-2013 Caps, who kept on recycling has beens like Morrison, Ribeiro, Grabowski etc at the 2nd line center position. Ideally you’d like to have more depth at defense, and center, than wing and goalie.

Sorry, that was my initial reaction…Very happy to see Strome resigned. I agree with Bmac how he has fit in seamlessly and really worked well with Ovechkin. Eller is for sure going to expire or be traded with the Center’s under contract.

How does one develop their prospects? You let them play big time minutes in the AHL. Connor and Hendrix are still young. There is no point in trading them just because we signed a young center to a 5 year deal. Every prospect is different and you don’t abandon them just because they are not ready for the NHL after 1 or 2 years of professional hockey. This is Hendrix’s first year against grown men and Connor never really played in the AHL until this year. Injuries happen and heaven forbid next year we are dealing with injuries to our centers then who do you have to fill in for them if you traded arguably your top 2 center prospects? Overall this is a great signing as Strome has fit in nicely and is still young.
It doesn’t develop them. The Capitals are set at forward for 3-5 years now with signing of Strome. It’s either play wing and try and win a job that way or they will leave when contracts expire….or be traded.
That’s what I thought. Both Connor and Hendrix seemed a bit overwhelmed with NHL hockey, not necessarily from a skill side but just the heaviness. They’re figuring that out in the AHL right now, give them some time. Tage Thompson took a few years longer than expected to get going as well.
Dylan can also play wing, injuries happen, it’s great to have centred depths. It’s a great contract and speaks to the organisation to find talent from outside.

Strange that Ottawa fires the coach of the AHL affiliate, since his brother is Assistant GM, but still not as odd as the Caps firing Bryan Murray in February 1990, and replacing him with his brother Terry. Imagine how family dinners were after that!

Those who are pack Ellers bags may which of centres mentioned above has more or less missed last 2 1/2 years & would be more $$$$ & it has been proven team can play without him!!!! Backstrom is most logical centre to be either bought out or sent away not only frees cap space allows team to see what younger “healthier” options are available.

Ummmm… Are you aware of how much Backstrom’s contract is? $9.2 mill for 2 more years after this one. So the total is $18.4 mill, buyout would be $12. 32 mill spread over 4 years. So that’s $3.1 mill of dead cap space yearly for 4 years. Ouch! That would pretty much cripple the team for those 4 years.
Still better than 9.2 mil of dead cap space and wasting good wingers with him to try to salvage this horrendous contract.

Caps just don’t buy out players. I get where you’re coming from but they simply won’t do that. The only hope would be that he gets LTIR’d at some point going forward but that would require a bigger fall off in his condition.
I would not underestimate Ovi’s impact on the roster. He has tremendous influence, even if he chooses not to speak out. The team has basically shied away from a rebuild because of his goal record chase. Backstrom’s and Ovi’s contracts closely match because they coordinated it that way. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Caps signed Orlov again because their wives are best friends.
I would expect Orlov to be signed as he is their top defensemen. Hopefully he doesn’t ask for too much over what he makes now but I think BMGM makes it work.
I would imagine that as usual the Caps will pay but do so at the detriment of the team structure and remain on the outside looking at other team advance into the playoffs and win Cups just to pay a long time player. I like Orlov and would love to hhve him. However at 31 and this will probably be his last contract I can see him wanting one just like Carlson has and I don’t see him giving the Caps a home town discount! What is best for this team and what is best for teds ego are NOT the same.
The person you need to remind that the business of Hockey is winning The Cup not worrying about getting scoring titles or satisfying your personal ego by just making the playoffs is Ted. Making the playoffs and losing in the first round hurts this team more than Mantha not producing as the effects of low draft picks is felt for years. This team has needed to start a rebuild for 3 years now yet they refuse because they “think” they still have a window to win a Cup which they no longe do and possible no longer even have a window to make the playoffs. Please no trade for a D-man. If management is going to make trades, then trade some of the UFA/RFA or under performing players for picks or prospects to develop and look to the future. Forget about the playoffs for at least the next 4-7 years and get Ovie the scoring title and work on rebuilding this team.
MCM and HL are young and can use more time in the A. Won’t hurt them. When Nick leaves one of them should be ready to step up. You don’t trade them. You have patience.

This is a great sign for the Caps!! Now they have their 1,2 and #4 C for next year. So CMM and HL have the rest of this season and the summer to bulk up and get their heads on right and come into training camp ready to compete for the 3rd line C job. Hopefully the “Brain trust” that did this doesn’t have a brain fart and suddenly trade guys from Hershey for a D just to get into the playoffs to satisfy the ego of a short goatee troll. This team for years has revolved around Ovie and I have no problem with that however how it seems that when making the playoffs only to lose in the first round makes this wicked troll happy. To tell the truth it doesn’t help the team in terms of obtaining talent because all it does in ensure a lower draft pick and the continuing floundering with mediocrity of this team. I can understand wanting Ovie to get the scoring record; I want that also; however trying to keep the team as a viable Cup contender no longer exists.
