The Washington Capitals announced on Wednesday that they have loaned Beck Malenstyn to the Hershey Bears.
MORE FROM THE CAPITALS
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have loaned forward Beck Malenstyn to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.
Malenstyn, 24, has appeared in five games with Washington this season, recording two points (1g, 1a). The 6’3”, 206-pound forward scored one goal in 12 games with the Capitals during the 2021-22 season. Malenstyn recorded his first career NHL goal and point on Nov. 30, 2021, against the Florida Panthers. In 20 career NHL games with the Capitals, Malenstyn has recorded three points (2g, 1a).
The Delta, British Columbia, native has appeared in two games with Hershey this season. Malenstyn recorded 16 points (10g, 6a) in 65 games with the Bears last season, establishing an AHL career high in goals and tying a career high in points. Malenstyn finished the season ranked tied for third on Hershey in game-winning goals (3) and sixth in games played. Malenstyn appeared in all three of Hershey’s playoff games, recording one goal. In 187 career AHL games with Hershey, Malenstyn recorded 47 points (24g, 23a).
The Capitals selected Malenstyn with their fifth-round pick, 145th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Malenstyn was injured blocking a shot in the first period of the game against the Vegas Knights on November 1.

The Capitals announced on November 4 that Malenstyn had surgery to repair a fractured finger and was expected to miss 6-8 weeks.
The Capitals recalled Malenstyn on October 19. The move came after right-wing Connor Brown sustained a lower-body injury in the team’s 6-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks the previous night.
Malenstyn had a goal and an assist in five games played before sustaining the injury to his finger.

So, this is a rehab stint?
Team did not specifically state, but that’s my understanding, as Cap Friendly says he requires clearing waivers.

Given that he didn’t play 10 games, and then wasn’t on the active roster, does he have to go through waivers again?
I think you’re right. He was an emergency callup in the first place, right? Connor Brown? I’m getting the injuries mixed up.
Hope so. Beck needs to be on the Caps 4th line pronto.
Agree. I thought he fit well at 4LW
Yes, he fits perfectly on the 4th line. Hard worker, physical play, great penalty killer, and has good speed.
Yes, yes and yes. And he eats (blocks) pucks, too.
The rule is 10 games or 30 days on the active roster (even if scratched). But good call on that. I just looked at CF as well and he has only played 5 games. And I don’t think he was scratched much at all once he game up. Maybe the first couple of games he was here, so free pass to Hershey. That is great from a players/waivers/Bears perspective. But it also probably means he stays in Hershey as we get bodies back which sucks (for him). Protas has locked the 4LW spot down and I don’t see them changing that barring other injuries.
” Protas has locked the 4LW spot down and I don’t see them changing that barring other injuries.”
You know this is proving rather interesting. We know that Beck is a great 4LW and perfect for that line, and yet Protas has played well there. If I had a choice, I’d keep Beck on that line, but both players have played that position well. Protas though, is proving to be a very flexible option for Lavi. He could be 4C too. What this means to me is, FINALLY, I’m on board to trade players and allow our youth to step in beginning next season. With solid young players who are ready for extended time in the NHL, we have the luxury to trade some veterans to improve our youth movement (draft picks?) We might end up losing some players because their contracts are up, and get nothing in return (I am getting that right?). That’s disappointing, but survivable. I do not want to mess with the chemistry of this years squad as they are in a dominant run. Trade what we have to, but only that. And we haven’t even talked about returning players.
What’s changed my mind? Why am I on board now? Because a number of youth have shown themselves to be an asset and truly ready for the NHL, and not on a pity contract, but an earned on. Even McMichael is getting value in his time in Hershey. I want to see him earn a spot on next year’s roster.
If and I do mean IF he were to be recalled from Hershey…..who goes? Aube-Kubel? Snively? Protas? That is a nice problem to have until you talk about probably loosing players to other teams like they did in Oct.! We lost Axel Jonsson-Fjallby and although he isnt scoring much (2g 4a in 30 games), he is playing well and as good as Kubel or better and Brett Leason is doing fine also (3g 1a in 29 games). Just would hate to see more of our young talent exit and gt nothing in return!
It’s a good question I’ve pondered quite a bit. Protas is waivers exempt, and that’s where I keep landing. But in no way is that a given.
Jonsson-Fjallby better than Aube-Kubel? I’m not buying that. I think we are lucky to have Aube-Kubel. No question his game creates opportunity and gives opponents pause when attacking. I love his physical game. Perhaps its a draw. That’s the most I can give you.
Time has proven that losing Leason and Jonsson-Fjallby weren’t not great losses. We are actually a better team because we didn’t keep them. When other players went down, we got Milano and Aube-Kubel in return, and to me that’s a clear win.
However, your main point was what about losing this core of young players, and I’m with you there. By the beginning of next season we must make room for some of these youth. I’m okay with trading vet’s at the end of the season. Trading vets in the middle of this season I’m against unless it’s a necessity due to volume of players and lack of space.
Agree with this. I liked Leason a lot. Didn’t think as much of AJF personally. The goal is to keep the best players. They were not so they got waived. Hope they do well, but they weren’t good enough to be in our top 23. GMBM was savvy and grabbed Milano and NAK as injuries racked up. I’m sure lots of other teams wish they had done that. We are much improved (and not much older) with NAK and Milano over AJF and Leason. Not even close.
