The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Saturday that Seattle Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak has been suspended three games for an illegal check to the head on Washington Capitals defenseman Alexander Alexeyev during Friday’s game at Capital One Arena.

Minutes after picking up his first NHL point, Alexeyev left during the second period, appearing to be in severe discomfort, and headed down the tunnel following the hit from Oleksiak, who was given a match penalty for an illegal check to the head.

The Capitals announced during the second intermission that Alexeyev would not return to the game due to an upper-body injury. Saturday morning, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Oleksiak would have a hearing on the incident.

There has been no update from the Capitals regarding Alexeyev’s status. The Capitals begin a two-game road trip with a stop in Winnipeg, clashing with the Jets at Canada Life Centre on Sunday. NBC Sports Washington will have the coverage starting at 7 PM ET.
