In Thursday night’s 5-4 shootout loss to the St. Louis Blues, Alex Ovechkin scored a goal and recorded two assists for three points in the game. Those three points gave him 1,428 NHL points, allowing him to move past Brian Trottier (1425) for 18th place on the all-time list for NHL Points. It marked additional milestones for Ovechkin as well.
In a game where the Capitals were behind 3-0 after the first period, Ovechkin scored a goal to break the shutout at 15:12. This was his ninth goal of the season and the 789th goal of his career. Dylan Strome assisted on the goal.

Ovechkin also earned two more points as the game progressed. He assisted on John Carlson’s second goal of the game, which came at 15:45 of the third period on the power play. This goal narrowed the Capitals’ deficit to 4-3.

Just over a minute later, at 16:57, Ovechkin had the secondary assist on Conor Sheary’s game-tying goal. Evgeny Kuznetsov had the primary assist.

Ovechkin’s three points allowed him to pass Brian Trottier for career points and also marked his 126th game where he had recorded three or more points, tying him for 23rd place with Jean Beliveau and Teemu Selanne.

This was also Ovechkin’s 400th multi-point game, allowing him to move past Mark Recchi (399) for 15th place in NHL history.

Ovechkin’s career point total is currently three points behind Sidney Crosby (1430), 30 points behind Teemu Selanne (1457), and 40 points behind Stan Mikita (1467).
His goal was also his 401st goal on the road which ties Wayne Gretzky for the most goals scored on the road. He currently is 11 goals shy of the 800-goal threshold and 13 goals shy of passing Gordie Howe for second place on the All-Time list

Ovi and Sid are gonna battle to the wire/retirement. That may be the most interesting stat watch.
Yep. Sid scored twice last night. I think he and Ovi are now only two active players with 100 or more opening goals or some such stat. Hate Sid, feel that he has a nasty temper and DOPES does nothing about it, but the guy is talented.
One surprising stat to me is top active scores still with original team. Ovi (Caps), Sid (Pits), and Stammer (Bolts) are top 3. #5 Malkin has only been a Pits. #6 Kane has only been a Hawk. #11 Bergeron has only been a Bruin. #14 Kopitar has only been a King. #15 Toews has only been a Hawk. #16 Marchand has only been a Bruin. #19 Couture has only been a Shark. Had no idea that in this salary cap era so many top scorers had remained with the team that drafted them.
We Stan Ovi. Not really interested in what others do tbh.
