Dylan Strome, Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov Shine In Capitals’ 5-4 Win Over Oilers

The Washington Capitals downed the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 5-4 Monday night at Capital One Arena. The win improved the Capitals’ record to 6-6-2 and 14 points on the season. Goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 24 saves in the victory.

Notes: After claiming him off the waiver wire on Saturday from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Aube-Kubel made his Capitals debut, slotting in at right wing on the third line. Orlov (lower-body) was deemed a game-time decision and would ultimately not play. Johansen drew into the lineup on the third defensive pairing.

First Period

Strome (3) would open tonight’s scoring, giving the Capitals a late 1-0 lead.

Second Period

Strome (4) would pot his second of the night just 26 seconds into the middle frame during a power play to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead. Kuznetsov (8) and Gustafsson (4) assisted.

During four-on-four play, the Oilers would get one back to make it a 2-1 game with a goal by captain Connor McDavid at the 8:33 mark.

At the 12:25 mark, Kuznetsov (1) would extend the Capitals’ lead to 3-1 during a five-on-three opportunity for the home team. Strome (8) and Gustafsson (5) had the helpers.

Edmonton would quickly convert from a goal by center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1:45 after Kuznetsov’s tally to put the game within one.

Ovechkin (8) would give the Capitals a 4-2 lead on another man advantage at the 14:36 mark. Gustafsson (6) and Kuznetsov (9) had the assists.

Third Period

Oilers center Leon Draisaitl would make it a 4-3 game 2:54 into the final frame.

It would be a 5-3 game on a late power play thanks to Kuznetsov’s second goal of the night. Ovechkin (5) had the lone assist.

Nugent-Hopkins would also get on the board again for Edmonton at the 18:54 mark to make it 5-4 still in favor of the Capitals.

      I really had high hopes going into the Coyotes game. pits beat the dogs 6-2, boston beat them 6-3, montreal 6-2, Ottawa 6-2, dallas 7-2.
