Alex Ovechkin scored his seventh goal of the 2022-23 season against the Arizona Coyotes at home on Saturday night. The goal was the 787th goal of his career, which passes Gordie Howe for the all-time record for most goals with a single franchise.

Ovechkin scored the goal in the second period of the Capitals’ contest against the Coyotes, on assists from Trevor van Riemsdyk and Anthony Mantha on the power play.

The goal marked his seventh goal of the season and the 787th goal of his career. It was also his 288th career power-play goal. Ovechkin tied Howe on the all-time list with one team in the Caps’ last game in Detroit against the Red Wings, Howe’s home for 25 seasons.

During the second intermission, Ovechkin spoke with NBC Sports Washington’s Al Koken on what the milestone means to him.

Ovechkin also surpassed former Capitals forward (and his former Head Coach) Adam Oates on the all-time Points list. In doing so, he also ties Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

Ovechkin is now 13 goals shy of the 800 mark for his career, and 15 from surpassing Howe’s 801 goals for second all-time in NHL history.

Saturday night’s milestone joins other notable Ovechkin milestones this year, which include tying Gordie Howe for first place in most goals for a single franchise in passing Gordie Howe for second place on the All-Time List in game-winning goals, passing Brett Hull (158) for sole possession of second place on the all-time list for multi-goal games.

Did I hear right that this also added another goalie to his list?

      Checking on that one.

Karel Vejmelka and Ovi played last April but Ovi didn’t score. They played Oct 2021 and Ovi scored an empty netter. I don’t find any other time he has played Ovi. But this is brute force research, no guarantees.

Thanks Fyre, I’m twirling plates from all appendages right now.

I haven’t read about another notch on his gun in any article, and Diane who knows all Ovi records hasn’t mentioned it, but I still can’t find where Ovi scored on Karel before. Just curious where he is in that record. How close is he to another pass?

Ovi is a loyal dude, I think this record says that the most. Really dig that about him.
