Mark Howe is the son of Gordie Howe, who currently ranks #2 on the All-Time List for Goals with 801 goals. Ovechkin is on the verge of tying another goal-scoring record by Howe — most goals for a single franchise which is 786.

Howe scored the first 786 goals of his career with the Detroit Red Wings, ranging from 1946-47 to 1970-71. After playing for a few years in the World Hockey Association (WHA), he played one last season in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers — 1979-80.  Gordie Howe had held the NHL record for career goals, until Wayne Gretzky passed him.

Mark Howe is a Hall of Fame player in his own right, playing as a defenseman. After playing several years in the WHA, he joined the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80 and played with them through 1981-82.

Howe played most of his career with the Philadelphia Flyers, playing with them from 1982-83 through 1990-91, before playing three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings to close out his hockey career. Mark Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
