The Washington Capitals announced on Wednesday that they have placed T.J. Oshie, John Carlson and Beck Malenstyn on injured reserve and recalled Sonny Milano, Garrett Pilon and Lucas Johansen from the Hershey Bears.
The Capitals have placed T.J. Oshie, John Carlson and Beck Malenstyn on IR and shifted Connor Brown to LTIR, the team announced.
They’ve recalled forwards Sonny Milano and Garret Pilon as well as defenseman Lucas Johansen from their AHL affiliate Hershey in corresponding moves.

John Carlson and T.J. Oshie were both injured in Saturday night’s game with the Predators (more on injuries here.). Oshie was subsequently ruled out “indefinitely” while Carlson was listed “day-to-day.” Both have missed the Capitals last two games.
Beck Malenstyn was recalled on October 19 following the injury to forward Connor Brown. He was injured blocking a shot during the first period of last night’s game against the Vegas Knights. He left the game and did not return.

Sonny Milano is the one new face in today’s recalls from Hershey. He was signed by the Capitals on October 16 and subsequently waived in order to re-assign him to Hershey. Milano immediately found the scoresheet in Hershey.

Lucas Johansen was the last defender cut from the Capitals 2022 training camp. He was subsequently waived and re-assigned to Hershey. Garrett Pilon has played in three games for the Capitals and scored a goal on his one and only shot in the NHL.

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled forwards Sonny Milano and Garrett Pilon and defenseman Lucas Johansen from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.
Milano, 26, has recorded three points (2g, 1a) in five games with Hershey this season. The 6’0″, 194-pound forward recorded 34 points (14g, 20a) in 66 games with the Anaheim Ducks in 2021-22, establishing career highs in assists, points and games played (66) and tying a career high in goals. Milano, who was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round, 16th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft, has recorded 81 points (36g, 45a) in 197 career NHL games with Columbus and Anaheim. The Capitals signed Milano as a free agent on Oct. 16.
Pilon, 24, ranks tied for second on Hershey in scoring with five points (1g, 4a) in seven games this season. Pilon scored one goal in two games with the Capitals during the 2021-22 season. The 6’0″, 196-pound forward recorded his first career NHL goal and point on Nov. 16, 2021, against the Anaheim Ducks and was one of nine Capitals rookies to score his first career goal last season. In three career NHL games with the Capitals, Pilon has recorded one goal. The Mineola, New York native recorded 42 points (17g, 25a) in 60 games with Hershey last season, leading the Bears in goals and ranking second on the team in points. In 213 career AHL games with Hershey, Pilon has recorded 132 points (50g, 82a). The Capitals selected Pilon with their third-round pick, 87th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Johansen, 24, has scored one goal in six games with Hershey this season. Johansen made his NHL debut and recorded his first career point on Dec. 31, 2021 against the Detroit Red Wings. The 6’2″, 180-pound defenseman recorded 28 points (8g, 20a) in 62 games with Hershey during the 2021-22 season, establishing AHL career highs in goals, points and plus/minus (20). Johansen finished the season ranked first among Hershey defensemen in plus/minus and second in goals, assists and points. In 201 career AHL career games with Hershey, Johansen has recorded 74 points (18g, 56a). The Capitals selected Johansen with their first-round pick, 28th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft.
The Capitals are making their way to Detroit this afternoon in advanced of their tilt with the Red Wings on Thursday night. Puck drop is set for 7:30 PM.

Totally agree. With the play at the C position of Kuzy and Eller and the lack of playing time for CMM at C I a little surprised that they didnt bring up Lapierre although his faceoff stats are not great; sitting at about 26% win.
And you want CMM to play more at center but yet his faceoff numbers are just as bad as Lapierre’s……..

Although Ovie has gotten better over his career he is still a below average when it comes to playing D. Kuzy is an enigma as he has all the tools to be one of the best in the game however he does not seem to have the desire or concentration necessary to be one of the best on a consistent basis. Ovie is what he always was a scoring machine, although he is sputtering a little now. Also both players were signed to long term contracts before he even got here and he has no choice but to play them. Not going to sit Ovie but maybe putting Kuzy on the 3rd line for a bit might shake him a bit.
Pepperidge Farm cookies were on sale last week and I bought two of the Double Dark Chocolate Milanos. Will save for the game.

I’m thinking this is going to be a tryout for Milano and Pilon, and if they don’t show they belong in <10 games we'll see a revolving door with Bears coming and going every week until the guys on IR get back or the end of the season (defined either as 82 games or the date the Caps get eliminated from the playoffs( whichever comes first.
Pretty good opportunity for a bunch of these guys to prove they are real NHL players. So far this year I believe Protas and Malenstyn already have … the rest… we'll see.
I should note that Johansen is in a similar boat, but there are fewer D in Hershey ready to fight for a job in DC… Maybe Nardella… Iorio really needs to be in Hershey getting decent minutes, so I hope they just leave him there. In any case, there’s really not many guys to go through the D-man revolving door, meaning Johansen is probably staying until Carlson gets back no matter what.
As I understand it, IR is seven days. For LTIR, is it 10 games AND 24 days? Or is it 10 games OR 24 days?
Know what upsets me about Malenstyn’s injury? ….
Back in training camp when the roster decision was coming down to the wire, I thought we should send McM down to Hershey in order to keep one of the other forwards so they wouldn’t be claimed. My reasoning was that there are always injuries (and I thought Oshie was a likely candidate for that), so give McM time developing there, and by the time Alex Alex is ready to come off injured reserve, there would be an injured player that he could replace. The age of our players made this scenario highly likely. The danger of it would be no injured, sending AJ down and losing him in the middle of the season when he potentially had even more NHL ice time.
Well……if I could think of that, they could, so why did they keep McM, and sit him, essentially clogging up roster room with the Caps? The decisions made here are not good.
What this tells me is that Lavi didn’t take into account the high probability of injury to his aging forwards, let alone normal injury time, and that’s after last seasons many lost man hours!!!!
Axel would have played 4th line LW but Leason does not move the needle much.
The frustrating part of losing Leason is that he is a fairly recent 2nd round pick with a huge frame and has taken time to adjust to different levels of play dating back to Junior hockey. The team traded a 2nd round pick for just a few games of Connor Brown and lost Leason to waivers on top of that. Not ideal asset management from the Caps lately.
Agree Rob. He’s got the physical attributes and is not done developing. We don’t know what his final ceiling will be.
The issue with his underwhelming skating skills may/may not be fixable, but it’s too early to say.
You’d think AJB and Leason are top 6 forward prospects with as much whining about them that goes on. Sheesh, we lost 2 fourth liners….maybe. Good Lord. Seemed Malenstyn was a perfect fit…so seems like the right call, just tough break with injuries. Youd think Leason and AJF were 20 years old too.

“Moving on” is never a bad strategy. There is nothing that can be done about it now.
Axel is 24. Hardly done developing. He scored 16 goals in 44 AHL games last year. Got better each year. Much like Chandler Stephenson do we really know his ceiling. Our GM is bad enough. Glad your not one.
Axel does have a fantastic (deceptive) shot. Bears coaches raved about it. It’s a shame we never got to really see it in DC.

And yet what have either of them done on the Ducks and Jets?? how many games have they played and how many points do they have??? This fanbase is so obsessed with Lavi doesn’t play young guys he hates playing them over veterans blah blah blah. I guess most of the fanbase didn’t watch last year when a rookie blue liner played on the top pair all year. Oh let’s not forget that a certain 3rd round pick who is young has been in the lineup since the start of the season. How about it comes down to earning ice time and a jersey not because they are “young”. This fanbase finally gets to see what playing all the “young” guys will be and what a rebuild is like. I can’t wait to read all these comments about why we aren’t winning hockey games. Can’t go back to the we need to play the “young” guys excuse now…..
Axel has a goal in 7 games played. Leason has no points in 4 games played.
So Axel playing for a new team with limited minutes so far has more goals than the Caps first line center. Which one should have been waived.
Such a good shot that his shooting % in NHL games is 8% and all anyone projects him as is a 4th liner…how will the Caps live without him??
I liked the guy too, but sheesh these guys that struggle to make NHL 4th lines sure get a lot of “ink” here.
You think Protas would be on the team if Backstrom and Wilson were healthy. No he is a line filler even though he deserves to be there. Otherwise why would he of the lowest average TOI of any forward who has played consistently.

Have to be Gretzky at age 24 or your a bust. No development. No time to mature. Move on to some old washed up guys instead. Only people who project him as 4th liner are moron Caps fans and HCPL. Otherwise why would he be claimed each time he has hit waivers. Someone must see some potential.
he’s been claimed and then put on the 4th line. The jets didn’t claim him and then put him in the top 6……..
Maybe they will have patience with him and by the time he is 26 or 27 he will have matured into something more than a 4th liner. Doubt they would claim someone just to be a career 4th liner. Not all organizations are run like this one.
