Metropolitan Division Goaltenders Report: Who’s Hot And Who’s Not

Believe it or not, the NHL’s 2022-23 season is already more than two weeks old, so it’s time to begin looking at a few of the early trends that are developing within the Metropolitan Division. First up are the netminders.

Here is our first snapshot of the Division’s goaltenders through the first two weeks of the season. The following graph plots each of the Division’s goaltenders save percentage (Sv%) and goals differential (xGA -GA) through the first two weeks of the season. [Click to enlarge].

The Flyers’ Carter Hart is off to a scorching-hot start in his first four starts of the season, trailing only the Buffalo Sabres’ Craig Anderson for the leagues’ best save percentage. As a result, the Flyers currently reside in third place of the Division.

The Hurricanes’ Frederick Andersen looks to be continuing the level of play he demonstrated last season, lifting the Hurricanes to first place in the Division. The Penguins are riding an excellent start by Tristan Jarry and sit closely behind the Hurricanes in second place.

The Capitals’ Charlie Lindgren is off to a good start posting the 6th-best save percentage and 7th-best goals differential in the Division. Number one starter Darcy Kuemper closely follows with the 8th-best save percentage and 10th-best goals differential in the Division.

Former Capitals netminder Vitek Vanecek has had a rough start to his 2022-23 campaign, giving up five goals in his first outing against the Red Wings. However, he’s done much better in his next two starts. He’s made 29 saves in 37 shots against at 5-on-5 play. The Blue Jackets and Elvis Merzlikins have started slow and currently sit in the basement of the Division.
