The Washington Capitals announced Sunday morning that they have signed forward Sonny Milano to one-year, one-way deal at $750,000. Milano will be immediately waived in order to be re-assigned to Hershey.
News leaked Saturday night that the Capitals were closing-in on signing the former Anaheim forward.
Hearing Sonny Milano will be signing with WASH. He does need to clear waivers…so he can start in AHL Hershey. Sounds like a one-year, one-way deal

If Milano clears waivers, and it’s very likely he will, as all teams have had the opportunity to sign the 26-year old in recent weeks, he will report to Hershey officially on Monday.

The Massapequa, New York native was selected by Columbus in the first round, 16th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft. Milano, who has recorded 115 points (40g, 75a) in 166 career AHL games, won the Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters in 2016.
Internationally, Milano has represented the United States at the 2014 U18 World Junior Championship, the 2015 and 2016 U20 World Junior Championships and the 2018 World Championship. Milano scored the gold medal clinching goal for the U.S. at the 2014 U18 World Junior Championship and earned bronze medals at the 2016 U20 World Junior Championship and at the 2018 World Championships.
Interesting signing. Intriguing that he was just sitting out there and couldn’t progress on his PTO. Assuming this is a one way deal despite trip to Hershey?
Worth a shot, let him prove his way out of Hershey.
It’s amazing nobody wanted a 14 goal scorer. Reminds me of Sprong. Wonder what the deal is.
I get it. The Capitals haven’t had much success with 1st round picks lately, so they’re snapping up as many of other teams 1st round failures as possible. Welcome Sonny, and join Dylan Strome, Gabriel Carlsson, Dylan McGrath and Henrik Borgstrom in the organization
McIlrath, not McGrath. Love my spell check…
Not!
Nobody is grading spelling in the comments. 😁
You noticed that as well. Interesting.
I take solace in fact that others seem to let their first rounds pick go more than we do. We did that with Dennis Cholowski last year as well as he was a first round pick that didn’t stick.
We had a really good run from 2000-2015, where we had something like 16 of 19 1st round picks make the NHL, only Pokulok and Finley from 2005 and Gustafsson from 2008 missing the NHL. Jury’s still out on McC and Lapierre. Maybe we’re due for a few misses
Another depth signing that just going to kill the moral for our younger players…
You have to wonder if it motivates or discourages the fringe prospects.
Milano is also a “younger” player….
I thought everyone wanted this team to get younger and yet people are complaining about signing a 26 year old…..
It’s somewhat infuriating that the team put Leason on waivers to keep McMichael on the roster and not play him. If Anaheim or any other team was interested in putting in a waiver claim on him you’d assume they’d be willing to trade a draft pick or something for him. I know the Caps have first dibs to take him back if Anaheim sends him down but it just seems like terrible asset management.
Neither Leason or AJF has even played for the Ducks or jets. They have been sitting in the press box as well. I also don’t think it’s that easy to trade a player that you are going to send down. Why would other teams want to give up a draft pick for someone they could get for free essentially. AJF and Leason are tweener players let’s stop making them out to be something they aren’t. You just never know with waivers and who/why someone gets claimed. At the time there was no indication that those two would get claimed hence why they decided to put them on waivers.
I believe AJF has been an intentional hold out so that he could learn the system. Last report was he was to make his debut tonight against the Stars in Dallas.
