Dru Krebs Reflects On Capitals Camp: “It Was A Cool Experience, Especially Being Able To Play Against My Brother”

Washington Capitals prospect Dru Krebs made his WHL regular-season debut for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night. Krebs returned to the team on Wednesday after  participating in both the Capitals’ rookie camp and main training camp. He also played in the Capitals first preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres, the team his older brother Peyton plays for.

“It was a cool experience, especially being able to play against my brother, and it’s always cool to play with the pros,” Krebs told the Medine Hat News. “Guys who play at this level and every single level going up, that increases the speed and size and everything, but at that level, it’s the top of the top and it’s just a really good experience to be able to play guys and get that experience underneath my belt.”

Peyton, 21, was drafted in the first round (#17 overall) by the Vegas Golden Knights in 2019, and traded to the Buffalo Sabres as part of the Jack Eichel deal in November, 2021.

Dru said he felt the experience was probably the most special for his father, who coached both of the Krebs brothers while they were growing up in Okotoks, Alberta .

“I think it was really cool for my dad especially because growing up my brother and I would alternate getting coached by my dad every year,” Krebs said. “So seeing us two grow up and play against each other is probably really surreal for him and then also my family.”

Krebs said the biggest takeaway he had from his second NHL camp was to continue building on his strength.

“All of the guys out there are men, they’re 30 or 25 and above for a lot of them and they’re physically mature,” Krebs said. “In order to play up there I need to gain some masculine, gain some strength as well.”

Krebs is entering his fourth full season with the Tigers. It’s also a season where he will be looking to earn a contract. The 6’-0”, left-handed defenseman was selected by the Capitals in the fifth round (#176th pick overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He remains unsigned by the Capitals.

“It’s a contract year for me, so that’s what my pursuit is to get an NHL contract. Also coming back to a really good squad that makes the playoffs and makes a push and also being as big of a leader as possible on this squad,” Krebs said. “I want to prove myself as a leader on this team and someone who can really help the squad win some games. It’s just a prove-it year.”

Medicine Hat head coach Willie Desjardins said Krebs already looks improved from last season.

“He’s bigger, stronger, such a good skater and he’s a real competitor too, so lots of good things he brings back to us,” Desjardins said. “It’ll be exciting to see him because every guy had the summer to kind of work at their game and we haven’t had a real chance to see him. But just looking at him, I know he’s improved.”

Krebs and the Medcine Hat Tigers return to action Saturday night when they face the Winnipeg Ice at Co-op Place in Medicine Hat.
