Where In The World Are They? Washington Capitals Prospects Not at Training Camp

Many of the Washington Capitals prospects participated in Development Camp from July 11-15 and then in Rookie Camp from September 15 through September 19 and are now participating in the Capitals’ main training camp. But several Capitals prospects were unable to participate in either Rookie Camp or Training Camp, due to college or participating in a foreign hockey league.

Below is the run-down of the prospects who did not attend Capitals training camp. Most of them are currently playing college hockey.

Ryan Chesley – The Caps drafted the right-handed defenseman in the second round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft with the 37th pick overall. Chesley started his freshman year at the University of Minnesota in August, with the Golden Gophers beginning their season on Saturday, October 1. They will play at two games home in 3M Arena at Mariucci against Lindenwood on October 1 and October 2.

Joaquim Lemay – The Caps drafted left-handed shooting defenseman Lemay in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft with the 119th pick overall. He is starting his freshman year at the University of Nebraska Omaha. The Mavericks begin their season on Saturday, October 1 in an exhibition game against Minnesota State. Their first regular season will be on October 7 against Niagara where it’s the first game of two that weekend.

Mitchell Gibson — The Caps drafted goaltender Mitchell in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft with pick #124 overall. He is now a senior at Harvard University. The Harvard Crimson play a scrimmage against Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and an exhibition game against the University of Guelph in Cambridge, Massachusetts before beginning their regular season on October 28 against Dartmouth College in Cambridge.

Harvard University Crimson Hockey Schedule

Brent Johnson – The Caps drafted right-handed defenseman Johnson in the third round (80th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently a sophomore at the University of North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks play an exhibition game at home on Oct 1 against Manitoba and start their regular season the weekend of October 7 and 8 when they play two games against Holy Cross.

North Dakota Fighting Hawks Hockey Schedule

David Gucciardi  — The Caps drafted left-handed defenseman Gucciardi in the seventh round (#213 overall) of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He started his sophomore year with the Michigan State Spartans. On Oct 1, the Spartans will play a game against the US National Development Team Program at the Munn Ice Arena in Lansing, Michigan. On the weekend of Oct 7-8, they play a home and home series against Bowling Green, the first in Lansing and the second in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Michigan State Spartans Hockey Schedule

Chase Clark – The Capitals drafted goaltender Clark in the sixth round (213th overall pick) in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He started his freshman year at Quinnipiac University. The Bobcats play an exhibition game on Oct 1 at home against the University of Toronto and another exhibition game against Providence University. They begin their regular season on the road against Boston College on Oct 7 and have their home opener on Oct 9 against Long Island University.

Clark has already dealt with setbacks even before the official start of the season. His head coach, Rand Pecknold, reported he had been dealing with injuries prior to the start of Quinnipiac’s own training camp.

Quinnipiac University Bobcats Hockey Schedule

Bogdan Trineyev – The Capitals drafted left winger Trineyev in the fourth round of the 2020 draft with the 117th pick overall. He is currently playing for Moscow Dynamo in the KHL. He has recorded two assists in five games but has not played since September 16.

Oskar Magnusson – The Capitals drafted Magnusson in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft with the 211th overall pick. He is currently playing with AIK in the HockeyAllsvenskan (second tier) league in Sweden. His team’s season has started and he scored a goal in their opener.

INTENDED OMISSIONS:

This list does not include Damian Riat who signed a multi-year contract in the LHC in the National League in Switzerland, Tobias Geisser who signed a three-year contract to play with EV Zug in the National League in Switzerland, or Ivan Miroshnichenko, who has still not been cleared by the KHL to play with Avangard Omsk.
