The Washington Capitals announced their roster for their opening preseason tilt against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. As expected, the roster is primarily made-up of Capitals prospects, as many of them will be getting their first real shot to make a statement in 2022 training camp.

Forward prospects Hendrix Lapierre, Alexander Suzdalev, Garrett Pilon, Beck Malenstyn, Brett Leason, Aliaksei Protas, Haakon Hanelt, Ryan Hofer and Joe Snively will get their first shot to make a statement on Sunday. Dru Krebs, Vincent Iorio and Martin Hugo Has will get their shots on the blueline.

In addition, forward Connor McMichael and Defensemen Gabriel Carlsson and Erik Gustafsson will get their first chance to help their cause. Zach Fucale and Hunter Shepard will get a chance in goal.

Roster

A Chance

Laviolette spoke about prospects getting their shot at the team’s media day on Thursday.

“They’re coming in here trying to earn something. That was a message to everybody. Try and earn an exhibition game. If you earn an exhibition game then you have a chance to show what you can do. Try to earn some more ice time from where you were at last year,” said Laviolette.

”Try and earn a job in Washington, in Hershey, in South Carolina. Try and earn yourself a spot somewhere. And so nothing really changes with regard to that. That’s training camp year after year. You get an opportunity to do something to try and make the most of that opportunity so yu can show what you can do.”

The Capitals and Sabres get things going at 2:00 PM on Sunday. We will have live reports from Capital One Arena, so keep it here.

The Capitals next preseason game is set for Wednesday in Philadelphia.

Do you think Stevenson will get a shot Wednesday? I’d like him to get some game time use out of his new helmet.
