Capitals’ Kuemper: “After Winning It Last Year, You Want To Do It Again”

New Washington Capitals goaltender Darcy Kuemper, who is coming off of a Stanley Cup victory with the Colorado Avalanche last season, said his first day with the team in training camp has been “awesome. It’s exciting now getting started. … Getting to know the guys has been great. They have all been very welcoming and have made the transition very easy so far.”

Regarding how changing systems will impact him during training camp, the 32-year-old said that they are largely same but there are “little variations here and there. Usually that comes pretty quick (usually a game or two but then he gets comfortable).”

Kuemper told the media that his preparation for the regular-season opener on October 12 will involve watching a lot of video. He added ”getting a couple preseason games helps as well.”

”I just try to go out there, play every night, and be a consistent force for the team so they know what they’re getting from me,” Kuemper added.

He texted his back-up and new Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren before training camp. “He’s a great partner to have and we’re looking forward to working together,” he said. “Having a good relationship with [him] is going to be really important going forward and it’s off to a good start so far. … We’re definitely on the same page [regarding] how we have to play and what makes us successful. Really looking forward to growing that relationship.”

When asked why he signed in Washington, Kuemper responded ”After winning it last year, you want to do it again.” He pointed to the experienced core that won recently as an attraction that lured him to the District.

On following in the footsteps of names like Olie Kolzig and Braden Holtby, Kuemper said that ”I don’t really think about my personal standing on a list or anything.”

”I’ll have to face it everyday in practice but it’s easier than during the game,” Kuemper concluded with regarding the fact that he won’t have to face captain Alex Ovechkin’s shot anymore.
