Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehérváry will reportedly return to Washington in the next few days, in advance of training camp, which starts on September 22. Prior to departing his home country of Slovakia, Fehervary was able spend some time with his favorite downtime activity, fishing.
“As a little boy, I used to go fishing with my father in Záhorie. In recent years I have returned to this hobby again and now I spend a lot of time with a fishing rod in my hand. I have my own car, so whenever I feel like it, I go to the water and fish all night,” he told Nový Čas last year.
A few days ago he managed to catch (via Rod and reel, not by noodling) a humongous catfish. He shared a photo of his latest catch on his Instagram account.

However, Fehervary always releases his catches back into the water.
“I’m a sportfisher, so everything I catch I put back in the water. Trophy fish should not end up on the baking sheet. However, I always take a photo with nice catches as a souvenir,” Fehervary told Novy Cas.
Fehérváry is currently preparing for his second full season with the Capitals. “At the moment, I’ve completed eight weeks of strength training and I’ve been going on the ice for a few weeks,” the 22-year-old told the official website of the Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH) at the end of August.
Fehervary was one of a handful of players to participate in the NHL/NHLPA European Players Media Tour on August 24 in Paris, France.
The Capitals will open training camp on Thursday September 22. Their first preseason game is set for Sunday, September 25 against the Sabres in Buffalo.
