Capitals Prospect Ryan Hofer Ready For Leadership Role With Everett Silvertips

As we continue our look at the 2022 training camps for Washington Capitals prospects, today we check-in with Ryan Hofer, who was selected by the Capitals with the 181st overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Hofer is set to play his third season for the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The Silvertips 2022 Training Camp wrapped-up this past weekend with an intrasquad scrimmage. The game was highlighted by a standout performance from veteran ’02-born forward Jackson Berezowski, who netted a pair of goals in the game. Hofer also played well, recording a goal and two assists on a line with Berezowski and ’06-born forward Jesse Heslop, who also had a goal and two helpers.

“The competition is healthy,” noted Hofer after the game. “Everyone’s working their hardest. The atmosphere and the culture with the Silvertips shows and everyone was going as hard as they can. It was a good game.”

Hofer, 20, finds himself in a leadership position after signing with the Silvertips as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

“Being in that leadership role with [Jackson] Berezowski helps a lot,” he explained. “He’s been here the longest. [You see] what he does and feed off that, preaching what the coaches and staff preach of the culture. You try to feed that into the young guys to keep it going.”

After being passed over in the previous two NHL drafts, Hofer’s 58-point season, in which he finished fourth on the team in Goals (25) in 67 Games Played, propelled him to notoriety among scouts, leading to his selection by the Caps in the sixth-round.

“Definitely a big part of it goes to the coaches for sure, and definitely my teammates. We have a great group of guys there,” said Hofer in an interview with’s Chris Wahl. “Everyone is super tight, they’re all trying to help each other, they’re all trying to push each other. And the coaches are just really, not only being a coach, but they’re more someone to talk to in the sense of if you’re struggling or need to work on something, they’re there to talk to you about it, and I think that’s really good in terms of developing and that’s what you need, you need good people around you and that’s what we have.”

The Silvertips will begin preseason action this Friday when they host a four-team, round robin weekend tournament in Everett.

While the roster for the Capitals upcoming “Rookie Camp” has yet to be released by the Capitals, it’s presumed Hofer will participate in the camp. The camp is set to open on September 15.

This could be another possible late-round “find”. A lot is made of Capitals recent top picks, but to me, it’s been the selections in the later rounds that have been more impressive (so far).

    Gofer could be a steal.

I like Hofer physicality and nose for the net. Now he is older so I suspect we’ll see more of that this year. Then he needs to get to Hershey and see how he does with other grown men. Probably a 4th liner in NHL at best, but a solid late round pick.
