We’ve brought you quite a few posts on Alex Ovechkin’s world-renowned hockey stick collection. We presented our first glimpse of Ovechkin’s stick collection back in 2015, then we brought you a closer look at Ovechkin’s man cave and his memorabilia collection in 2o16. And most recently, Ovechkin gave wife Nastya a tour of the collection for a Russian media broadcast.
Nastya asked Alex about his first stick, which came from Mario Lemieux. The two also discussed which stick was the most difficult to obtain, which was Connor McDavid’s stick. Ovechkin also talked about his plans for the collection once his playing days are done.

“I remember which stick appeared first. It was the stick of one of my favorite players, Mario Lemieux. We played away against Pittsburgh and he passed that stick through a service man. The next day, when we returned to Washington, he handed me this stick, autographed by Lemieux,” said Ovechkin.
“When we play against some star players, we exchange sticks. Then I started collecting mine too. I put marks on them, for example, a stick with which I scored 50 goals.”

As Ovechkin stated in the interview with his wife, all of the sticks and game memorabilia will eventually reside in his museum in Moscow.
[Nastya]: “I know that in the future you want to house this whole collection of sticks in your museum. What else will there be?”
“There will be sticks, skates, gloves, T-shirts, paintings … Both mine and other players. For fans who follow the NHL in Russia. I think it will be interesting.”
Ovechkin confirmed his plans for the museum earlier this week in an interview Russian media.
“My collection has about 200 sticks. I have the sticks of all the great players who played in the NHL. And there are a lot of my sticks from anniversary events. The 50th goal or 100th point, these sticks will be in the museum, which will be opened in Moscow,” Ovechkin told Champoionat’s Sergei Emelyanov.
Hopefully Ovechkin will also plan for some type of museum in the Washington, DC area, as he will certainly have plenty of memorabilia to fill two museums.

Whether it is Ukraine or something else, I just get the feeling that Ovi is feeling more Russian these days. Since the season ended, he has not been in the DC area nor in his Florida condo. I don’t believe his Spirit investment ever went through but have read a number of announcements about Moscow investing.
Number of weddings this summer and he’s missed all of them.
Did he miss them or was he not invited? As for leaving Russia this summer, maybe his buddy Putin told his he could leave in Sept with his wife and kid or if he left during the summer they had to stay. Now that sounds like something Putin would do, regardless of their friendship!
I think he would have been invited but might have agreed not to go because he would be a distraction. Have not heard of any visa issues. He and his family did go to Turkey for a vacation, so no one was being held hostage.
I sure hope some form of museum is opened in the DC area. But I understand he wants to share his career with his fellow Russian’s, who did not get to experience a majority of his career.
I dont think that is it at all, I think he wasnts to have his collection close at hand so he can take his son there. AS much as he wants it in Russia I dont see the Russian people paying bucks to go see it where in DC they would thus giving him a constant stream of cash for awhile.
I think he sees his future in Moscow. I would not be surprised to have him buy into a khl team.
