The annual event, initially held in Toronto, “showcases” many of the league’s best young talent, and provides an opportunity for the league’s future stars to gather and meet with the media.

The event also provides Upper Deck, the official trading card partner of the NHLPA and the NHL,  with an opportunity to capture photographs and videos of many of the game’s top young prospects and rookies in their official NHL team uniforms. The content collected will be used for upcoming Upper Deck trading cards and related promotional materials.

For the first time in the event’s history, the 2019 NHLPA Rookie Showcase was held at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, Virginia on August 25, 2019. Defensive prospect Alex Alexeyev was the Capitals’ lone representative.

Other past Capitals prospects participating in the event included Madison Bowey (2015), Jakub Vrána and Riley Barber (2016) and Ilya Samsonov (2018). No Capitals prospect was invited to the 2017 event.

I had assumed that the teams picked the rookies, but your last comment about no Cap in 2017 changed my assumption. Who actually does pick?

    • Jon Sorensen says:

It’s not confirmed, but I suspect Upper Deck has a lot to say about it. Teams probably have input as well. It’s possible the Caps didn’t want to send someone in 2017.

      • steven says:

If I remember the rookies that year would ahve been Bowey, Djoos, Varna and Barber. Guess that Upper Deck didnt see any value there and with the exceptin of Varna they were right.

        • Jon Sorensen says:

It’s interesting, they sent two the previous year in Vrána and Barber. No teams really ever get to send two.

          • DWGie26 says:

Kings, Sabres, Kracken, Ducks, and Wild all sending two this year.

            • novafyre says:

No one from the Bolts. They have traded their prospects and traded their draft picks past three years. Was really surprised that Syracuse did as well as they did last year. Bolts have not been helping their AHL or ECHL affiliates.
