Peng also noted that former New York Rangers head coach David Quinn and current Boston Bruins assistant coach Joe Sacco are also candidates to become the 11th head coach in Sharks history.
Carbery, 40, is in his first-year as Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach, credited with turning the 16th-ranked Maple Leafs power play in 2020-21 to the NHL’s best this past season. The Maple Leafs converted at a 27.27 percent rate last season.
Also today: hearing TOR is hiring AHL Hershey’s Spencer Carbery as an assistant coach. Carbery was AHL Coach of the Year in 2021.

Before moving to Toronto, Carbery spent three seasons as the head coach of the Hershey Bears. Carbery was named the AHL’s Coach of the Year in 2021, his last of three seasons as the head coach of the Bears. He also won the same award in the ECHL in 2014 during a five-year run as head coach of the South Carolina Stingrays.
Spencer Carbery Wins AHL’s Most Outstanding Coach Award For 2020-21 Season
Under Carbery’s guidance, the Bears finished atop the AHL standings in 2021 with a record of 24-7-2-0, a .758 points percentage that ranks as the second-highest mark in the franchise’s 83-year history.
Hershey, which lost in regulation just once on home in 2021 (14-1-2-0), allowed a league-low 2.33 goals per game in 2020-21 and ranked eighth in scoring (3.33).
We predicted back in early 2021 that Carbery was “primed” for a head coaching job in the NHL.
Spencer Carbery Primed For Future Job In Washington

Yet another one that got away.
It’s a fast ascent for Carbery. I both like it and hate it, but at only 40 he has a lot of coaching years left. I’d rather him in Washington with a few years of NHL head coaching experience. Don’t want another Reirdon / Brunette situation.
It’s not the same situation – Reirden was hired by GMBM, whereas Brunette was hired by Zito’s predecessor. New guys clean house.
I’d love to have him now. Cooper, Bednar, Gabby all good AHL HC to NHL HC examples.
Good example. They all popped out of that same circle.
