In his introductory press conference as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, Rick Bowness confirmed that former Washington Capitals assistant Scott Arniel will join his staff.

Prior to coming to Washington, Arniel was an assistant coach for the New York Rangers and the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2010-12.

In addition, Arniel worked as an assistant coach for the AHL’s Manitoba Moose from 2000-02 before leaving to work as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabres. In 2006, he returned to the Moose to become head coach where he led them to four Calder Cup Playoff appearances (including a final loss to the Hershey Bears, the Capitals’ minor league affiliate, in 2009).

Arniel was drafted 22nd in the second-round of the 1981 NHL Draft by the Jets and spends his offseasons in Winnipeg.

Opportunity to upgrade. Wonder if Orpik is interested in coaching full time?

    Why couldn’t he take Blaine!!!

Were the Caps ready to move-on from Arniel in any case; seems like rumors of his departure have been simmering for a while. Any idea why?
I hope we can find a good (better) replacement.

Orpik would be a good choice or how about Joel Ward or Jamie Howard or Phil Housley (or does he still coach Nashville) or John Slaney or Andrew Burnette. Go after guys like Ward and Burnette and Slaney and promise them HC job after next season on a 3 year contract for the rebuild. If you want to dip into the AHL ranks how about Mike Knuble or Todd Krygier or Tim Army or Nolan Yonkman or JD Forrest or Michael Peca or lastly but not the least Trent Whitfield. I would alsobe in the market for a new GM…..wondr if Orpik would be interested or maybe Guerin or possible Mark Hunter or Briesbois or Verbeek. we have basically had the same GM since 1997 (Mcphee and his clone MacMellan. Time for new and younger blood and new ideas and bet of all new players who are younger and not retreads.

Also very good candidates, Steven! Hopefully Caps read the comments here. 😁 I will also toss in a personal favorite in Jeff Halpern (long shot). He’s been winning cups in Tampa, and certainly has value he could bring to the Caps.

I wonder if Canberry would come here for associate head coach which would be a promotion. He could Tudor under Lavi. And while i am in the minority, i would prefer to see Lavi sign a two-year extension with heir-apparent ready to go after Ovi years. But our coaching carrosel has not been good.
