The soon-to-be 29-year-old recorded four assists, a -3 rating, 48.97% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, 49% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and 50% five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 37 regular-season games with the Avalanche.
Jets sign C Sam Gagner to one-year, $750,000 contract

Golden Knights acquire G Adin Hill from Sharks for 2024 fourth-round pick
The 26-year-old, who has one year left on a contract that counts $2.175 million against the salary cap, went 10-11-1 with a .906 save percentage, 2.66 goals-against average, and two shutouts in 25 games during his lone season in San Jose.

Kings re-sign LW Gabriel Vilardi to one-year, $825,000 contract, C Jaret Anderson-Dolan to one-year, two-way contract
Anderson-Dolan’s contract is worth $750,000 after the 22-year-old appeared in seven NHL games and scored 24 goals and 47 points in 54 AHL games last season. Vilardi, 22, scored five goals and seven points in 25 NHL games in addition to 15 goals and 38 points in 39 AHL games. He also appeared in two postseason games.

Flames acquire LW Jonathan Huberdeau, D MacKenzie Weegar, C Cole Schwindt, a 2025 lottery-protected first-round pick from Panthers for LW Matthew Tkachuk and a 2025 fourth-round pick; Panthers re-sign Tkachuk to eight-year contract that carries $9.5 million cap hit
Huberdeau, 29, tied left-wing Johnny Gaudreau for second in the NHL with 115 points and led the league with 85 assists in 80 regular-season games last season. He added one goal and five points in 10 postseason games. Huberdeau has one season left on a contract that carries a very team-friendly $5.9 million cap hit before becoming eligible for unrestricted free agency.
Tkachuk’s 104 points ranked eighth in the league last season while his 62 assists were tied for 11th. His +57 rating was also good for third. Tkachuk became a restricted free agent on July 13.
Weegar, 28, earned eight goals, 44 points, a +40 rating (ninth), 57.61% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, 57.27% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and a 58.44% five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 80 regular-season games last season. He has one season left at $3.25 million against the salary cap before becoming eligible for unrestricted free agency.
Schwindt, 21, played in three NHL games last season and scored 19 goals and 41 points in 72 AHL games. He was drafted 81st overall by the Panthers in 2019.
Sharks re-sign Lorentz to two-year contract ($1.05 million cap hit)
The 26-year-old, who was acquired in a trade with Carolina and became a restricted free agent on July 13, earned eight goals and 13 points in 67 regular-season games and appeared in five postseason outings last season.
Ducks re-sign D Urho Vaakanainen to two-year contract
The 23-year-old earned six assists, a 44.01% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, 42.62% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and 44.04% scoring chances-for percentage in 29 games with the Bruins and Ducks last season.

Notes: McDonagh, 33, earned four goals, 26 points, a +15 rating, a 47.68% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, a 50.9% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and a 49.87% five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 71 games last season, when he averaged 22:27 per game (third among Lightning defensemen), including 22 seconds on the power play (third) and a team-leading 3:15 on the penalty kill. McDonagh has four years remaining on his contract, which counts $6.75 million against the salary cap.
Myers, 25, earned a goal, four points, a +5 rating, a 48.15% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, a 43.73% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and a 43.65% five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 43 games in his first season in Nashville. He averaged 14:53 per game, including a minute on the penalty kill (both seventh among Predators blueliners). Myers has one year at $2.55 million left on his deal and buying his contract out would give the Lightning a $617,00 credit in 2022-23 but they would owe $633,000 the following season.
Mismash, 23, posted six goals and 12 points in 57 games with the Milwaukee Admirals, the Predators’ AHL affiliate.

Notes: Fiala, 25, signed an eight-year contract extension that carries a $7.9 million cap hit with the Kings after setting career-highs in goals (33), assists (52), and points (85) in 82 games with the Wild this past season. He could have become a restricted free agent on July 13. Faber, who will turn 20 on August 22, was drafted 45th overall by the Kings in the 2020 NHL Draft and scored two goals and 14 points in 32 games at the University of Minnesota.

Hey Jon (and anyone else), who would you have traded for Fiala from the Caps? I would’ve traded our 1st round this year (20th overall) plus Iorio or Alexeev maybe. Or maybe something involving Mantha. Fiala signed for 7 years might be better than Mantha signed for 2 years given the age differences. Lots of cap implications, of course.

Yeah… i would do that. Would seem Kings got the better of this deal on paper. I think it probably would have cost us 1st round and a forward prospect (leason, Protas, AJF, or Snively). I would do any of those combination for Fiala. or either of the Dee you mentioned or LuJo for that matter.

The question is where do the Caps find cap space for another big salary, unless Backstrom is truly done and all of the young D drafted in the past decade become solid NHL players.
After next year the Caps have $29.4M in projected space, but only 10 players under contract. That means they have ~$2.25M per player to fill out a full 23-man roster. Add Fiala’s $7.9M and the remaining 12 players would have to average $1.8M. That’s not enough to bring in enough talent to win.
The entire Caps D corps except Carlson is in FA. Fehervary is an RFA but he’s gonna get paid a LOT more than his current $800K. Orlov and Jensen are going to get raises from somebody. And the Caps would still need to sign a veteran D or 2… or 3… or 4… Even if they re-signed Orlov and Jensen they’d still be short several D unless the kids really step up or they find some cheap vets like TVR.
Even with Eller off the books after this year, they will still be strapped for cap space unless they can lose some big salaries… like Backstrom’s and/or Kuznetsov and/or Mantha and/or Wilson. But then how do they replace that production with anything cheaper.
Sorry guys, as nice as it would be to have another high-priced forward this upcoming year, there’s no way to fit such a player under the cap beyond 22-23 without blowing up the rest of the Caps roster.
Which might be a good idea, but that’s a separate comment…
This is because like other teams the caps have kept their core together letting them get older and more expensive while getting low draft picks and only able to sign players at league min or a little over. They need to learn to trade some of their talend as they gets older for younger talent or picks to keep the pipeline supplied and not have to worry so much about the cap. Better to retool along the way then make the slow slide into ebuild. Need to choose in keeping Carlson or letting Orlov go in trade or worse after next season as a UFA and receive nothing. Have to make a decision on a very bad trade acquisition in Mantha and also on what to do an aging Eller. They trade their best goalie and keep a head case who costs more and you will have to pay him at least $2 mil a year for next season. Ted and the GM showed that they are willing to spend money on talent but not on talent on the bench as they let Trotz go and Lambert with him. This team had at least 1 manye 2 more Cup runs and possible wins in them with Trots. And to replace a HOF coach with Reardon was a laugh. Now on the verge of a rebuild they have a coach who does not like young players and an owner that does not realize that it would be better to rebuild sooner than later. I have been a Caps fan since the 70’s and can say this without a shadow of a doube…..when this team does its rebuild Ted is going to see many empty seats nightly in the stadium because people are not going to pay to see loosing teams. Its nice to be loyal to players but you forget about what a head coach can do and frankly losing in the first round all the time isnt worth it and might as well not make the playoffs to get a better draft pick.
