The New York Islanders announced Monday morning that Barry Trotz has been relieved of his head coaching duties.

It is unknown if the firing includes former Capitals coaches Mitch Korn and Lane Lambert.
“I believe this group of players needs a new voice,” although would “rather not get into any of the reasons,” said Lamoriello Monday morning.
The New York Post’s Larry Brooks is reporting that he had heard “chatter” over the last week or so that Trotz did not want to return for his final year.
Had started to hear chatter over last week or so that Trotz might not want to return. Was not able to nail it down. Perhaps this is a function of that… https://t.co/ZvXiTi2Zuu

Trotz also dealt with the passing of his mother on January 1, which included a week-long absence from the team.
The Islanders had a poor season in 2021-22, which included a severe COVID-19 outbreak that derailed them following a season-opening 13-game road trip. As a result, the Islanders missed the playoffs after finishing 37-35-10.
Lou: Spoke to Barry this morning, Those were the only people who knew of decision other than ownership. Did not consult players on decision.

With an aging roster and a salary-cap table that sees them committed to their current core — one that Trotz and players alike continually expressed belief in toward the end of the season — general manager Lou Lamoriello evidently believed that a change was needed.
Trotz, 59, joined the Islanders in 2018 after helping the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup the previous season.
Lou will not answer whether Barry Trotz needed a break from coaching or is looking for a different position.
Will also not answer what he’s looking for as a “new voice” for #Isles
Other coaches still under contract.

Overall, Trotz is 914-670-60-168 in 23 seasons as a head coach. He is 83-79 in the playoffs.
Trotz has one year left on his deal at $4 million for next season.
Figured that was going to happen. Hard to get rid of players when they underperform and heven help if anyone would suggest that they take a reduced salary next season so the coach gets the axe. I think that this is the coach that the Caps should have paidas he was a great fit for this team and they were successful with him and might have even had a 2nd Cup.
He had a couple of tough breaks this season, with 13-game road trip to start season and a major Covid outbreak. They had no chance.
A road trip that long is indeed a killer. Just wondering if Lambers and Korn were also let go and if so is there any possability that both or either, especially Korn, could return to the Caps. Reason for Korms return is Murry has shown nothing in the 5 years he has been here and IMHO not all minor league coaches are major league material. Some are good at helping them along but not so good at developing them at higher leels.
Was wondering the same about Lambert and Korn, so I did some digging. As of today.this morning, they are still under contract with the Islanders. But that could change.
Mitch Korn, please report to Washington.
Amen!!!
Wow, how bout Mitch Korn in your korner?!?! YES PLEASE 🤞🙏😳
Yes please! Lane Lambert too.
Sounds like he may want a break from coaching.
Would not be surprised
I am surprised about this! tough set of cards dealt to Islanders this year with arena, 13 game opening road swing, massive COVID issues. I suspect Trotz also didn’t want to be there so interesting language in that management said he was relieved of duties. I suspect this was mutual.
And yes, bring Korn back to DC! But he wanted to retire before as well so i doubt it. Think he may be done.
Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018. Barry Trotz went to the Islanders in Fall 2018 season. He was only with the Islanders for 4 years.
Not sure I follow. What is your point?
Article says Trotz joined Islanders in 2017 nit it was 2018 after Caps won the cup
