Capitals Beat Islanders, 4-3 (SO); Alex Ovechkin Passes Jaromir Jagr

The Washington Capitals downed the New York Islanders, 4-3, in a shootout Tuesday night at Capital One Arena in the District. The victory improves the Capitals record to 33-18-10 (76 points) on the season.

SUMMARY

The Capitals opened the scoring midway through the first period with a greasy goal from Anthony Mantha and held the 1-0 lead at the first break.The Islanders tied the game early in the middle frame and added a late goal for a 2-1 lead at the second intermission.

The Capitals tied the game midway through the final period on Axel Jonsson-Fjallby’s first career NHL goal. Alex Ovechkin would give the Capitals a 3-2 lead and move past Jaromir Jagr for third place on the all time goals list, but Anders Lee would answer late in regulation to tie the game, 3-3, sending the game to extra time.

Overtime was scoreless. The Capitals would win it in the shootout.


STATS


STARTERS

Vitek Vanecek (14-7-0-5, 2.35 GAA, .918 sv%) got the start between the pipes for the  Capitals. Semyon Varlamov (4-12-0-1, 2.85 GAA, .912 sv%) got the start in goal for the visiting Islanders. The starting forward lines and defensive pairs for the Capitals:


FIRST PERIOD

The Capitals opened the scoring midway through the first period with a goal from Anthony Mantha (4) at 12:21 of the first frame. Evgeny Kuznetsov (39) and Conor Sheary (15) had the helpers.

That would be it for the first period. The Isles led in shot attempts 21-17, scoring chances 11-9. The Capitals led in high-danger chances 5-1 and expected goals for (xGF) 1.11 to 0.39.


SECOND PERIOD

The Islanders would tie the game early in the middle frame. Brock Nelson (24) had the game-tying goal at 4:55. Zdeno Chara (9) and Noah Dobson (23) had the helpers.

The Capitals challenged the goal for goaltender interference, but the play and the goal was deemed good, putting the Capitals ona resultant penalty kill. The Capitals would kill the penalty.

The Capitals would appear to retake the lead with a goal from Justin Schultz, but after review the play was ruled off sides.

The Islanders would then take a 2-1 lead. Kyle Palmieri (10) would pot the go ahead marker at 17:02 of the second period. Josh Bailey (24) and J.G. Pageau (16) had the assists.

The period would end with the Islanders leading 2-1. Capitals led in shots attempts 17-16, with the Islanders leading in scoring chances 9-6. Capitals led in high-danger chances, 3-2 and expected goals for .77 to .57.


THIRD PERIOD

The Capitals tied the game midway through the final frame with a tally from Axel Jonsson-Fjallby (1) at 10:13 of the third period. The score was setup on a beautiful zone entry by Dmitry Orlov.

The Capitals would then take a 3-2 lead on a snipe by Alex Ovechkin (37). The goal was career goal #767, passing Jaromir Jagr for 3rd place on the NHL’s all time list. More here.

Regulation would end with the game tied 3-3.


OVERTIME/SHOOTOUT

The overtime period was scoreless.

The Capitals would win it in the 8th round of the shootout. Anthony Mantha would pot the winning goal.

The Capitals are back in action on Thursday when they visit the Blue Jackets in Columbus. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM ET.


SHAVINGS

  • Anthony Mantha gave the Caps a 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season. He now has two goals in his last four games.
  • Evgeny Kuznetsov and Conor Sheary each picked up the assists on Mantha’s goal. Kuznetsov has extended his point streak to six games (4g, 4a).
