It was a much-needed win for the Washington Capitals Thursday night at Bell Center, beating the Montreal Canadiens in a 5-2 contest. For Capitals left-wing and Herndon, Virginia-native Joe Snively, it was a night to remember as the 26-year-old picked up three points, including his first and second career NHL goals.

He is the third Virginia-born player to score an NHL goal, joining Eric Weinrich (Roanoke) and Scott Lachance (Charlottesville). Snively trained at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington during his youth and was a participant in Washington’s Little Caps program.

Following the game, Snively told the media he considered shooting the puck for the empty-netter and a hat trick, but passed to right-wing Tom Wilson as a “safer” choice.

Snively bumped up to the top line for tonight’s game and expressed how it was “an amazing opportunity” to play with Wilson and center Evgeny Kuznetsov, adding, “The last game I got to play with [center Nicklas Backstrom]. It’s a privilege and I’m just trying to make the most of it. I’m just having a lot of fun.”

“He’s detailed, he’s tenacious, he’s quick, and he’s got a good skill level,” head coach Peter Laviolette said about Snively.

Snively signed with the Capitals as a free agent on March 18, 2019. He recorded an assist in his NHL debut on December 19, 2021, against the Los Angeles Kings and became the first player in franchise history to play for the team as a native of Virginia. Snively has recorded five points (2g, 3a) in six games with the Capitals this season. He leads the AHL’s Hershey Bears in points and goals this season, recording 38 points (15g, 23a) in 35 games.

Joe was on fire his last two months in Hershey. He’s just continuing his excellent level of play. He’s been incredible.

After that second goal…. Joe Snipely.

As a VA native, very happy for him.

Great to see a local hometown guy doing good for the team. Let the young guys play more, I guess. But I won’t make too much of this win—although a win is a win. Still, I wanted to see the Caps work on their game against a bottom dweller team to lock them down defensively. I didn’t really see it, but hopefully they keep working at it and it comes together in time for the playoffs.
