With the Washington Capitals looking to break an 0-2-2 skid on Saturday afternoon and looking to add their first victory of the Year 2022, a strong performance by goaltender Vitek Vanecek helped the team secure a 2-0 shutout victory over the New York Islanders on Long Island.
With the Caps leading the Isles 1-0 heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation, the team and Vanecek stood strong en route to the team’s 21st win of the season and Vanecek’s third career shutout.

In his career, Vanecek has been dominant against the Capitals’ Metropolitan Division rival, now holding a record of 4-1-0 in six games, and recording two of his now-three career shutouts against New York.
Two of Vanecek’s three career shutouts have come against the Islanders (also April 27, 2021 vs. NYI).

Vanecek is now 7-4-5 on the 2021-22 season and made 23 saves in the effort against the Islanders. Having gone just 2-2-2 over his last seven games, with a .900 Save Percentage and allowing 20 goals, the performance against New York was a boost for a Capitals team that has had its fair share of struggles in the last handful of games.

Among goaltenders with 55 or fewer games played since 2020-21, Vanecek’s 28 wins are tied for third in the NHL (Jack Campbell: 35; Frederik Andersen: 32; Robin Lehner: 28).

This is why we don’t trade for a goaltender. If D plays good we can beat anyone!
We need a little more consistency. If they played like today, yes, no need to make a move.
Goalies are only as good as D in front of them.Jon you are right about consistency. But I think needs are speed and youth.
