Washington Capitals forward prospect Axel Jonsson-Fjallby took the traditional rookie solo lap prior to Capitals warmups on Monday night. Jonsson-Fjallby is making his first career NHL start against the Buffalo Sabres tonight at Capital One Arena.

“I’m really happy about it,” the 23-year old said about being recalled from the AHL’s Hershey Bears. “Feel like my game’s been good this year…finally get a chance, so it’s really fun.”

He said it would be “nice” to play on the penalty kill at an NHL level since that is his specialty in Hershey. Jonsson-Fjallby also noted that he looks up to fellow Swede and forward Carl Hagelin, noting that’s “the type of player I’m trying to be.”

He said his family, friends, and his girlfriends’ family will probably be watching back home in Sweden.
Jonsson-Fjallby, 23, has recorded seven points (3g, 4a) in nine games with Hershey this season. Jonsson-Fjallby ranks tied for second on the team in goals and points.

In 31 games with the Bears last season, Jonsson-Fjallby recorded 15 points (10g, 5a) and set an AHL career high in goals per game (0.32). The 6’1″, 189-pound forward also played in 26 games with Vastervik IK in the Swedish Hockey League, where he recorded 15 points (4g, 11a).
In 117 career games with the Bears, the Stockholm, Sweden, native has recorded 48 points (27g, 21a).
The Capitals selected Jonsson-Fjallby with their fifth-round pick, 147th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft.
