Vitek Vanecek Will Start For Capitals; Aliaksei Protas Sent Down To AHL

Goaltender Vitek Vanecek will be in net for the Washington Capitals on Saturday when they host the Philadelphia Flyers at Capital One Arena (7 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington) after making 13 saves on 15 shots in relief of Ilya Samsonov less than halfway through Thursday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers. This will be the 25-year-old’s third straight appearance.

Goaltender Martin Jones will start for the Flyers.

As announced on Friday, center Hendrix Lapierre will replace left-wing Anthony Mantha in the Capitals’ lineup after the 27-year-old left the Capitals’ 5-4 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers in the second period on Thursday and underwent shoulder surgery on Friday. Mantha will be out indefinitely.

Center Aliaksei Protas was re-assigned to the AHL’s Hershey Bears on Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers will not reveal their lineup until head coach Alain Vigneault’s media availability later in the afternoon but here is their projected lineup for Saturday’s game.

The Capitals assigned defenseman Bobby Nardella to the AHL’s Hershey Bears on Saturday. The 25-year-old could not have been assigned to the AHL before since he was injured.

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin enters Saturday’s game two goals shy of passing Brett Hull (741) for fourth place on the NHL’s all-time goals list and two assists shy of recording his 600th career assist to become the ninth active player to reach the mark. In addition, center Evgeny Kuznetsov is one point away from passing Dennis Maruk for 11th place on the Capitals’ franchise points list and three assists shy of 300 career assists.
