Washington Capitals center Brett Leason scored his first career NHL goal in his second game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Monday night.

After the puck rung around the boards and landed on defenseman Nick Jensen’s stick at the left point, Leason whipped it from out high and it deflected off of two Lightning backcheckers and past the glove of goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy just 1:13 in the first. The goal marked the earliest goal scored in a game by the Capitals this season.

He became the third rookie to score a goal for the Capitals in 2021-22 (center Hendrix Lapierre and defenseman Martin Fehervary), trailing only the Anaheim Ducks (four) for the most among all teams.

Leason’s linemate from junior, center Aliaksei Protas, made his NHL debut on Monday night and centered Leason’s line.

The 22-year-old was the 56th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft by the Capitals.
