Samsonov Expected To Start, Dowd Noncommittal Against Coyotes, Leason Recalled: News From Capitals’ Morning Skate

On Friday, the Washington Capitals held morning skate prior to their tilt against the Arizona Coyotes at Capital One Arena (7 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington). Here is the latest news from Medstar Capitals Iceplex.

The Capitals recalled forward Brett Leason from the AHL’s Hershey Bears. They also announced that they have placed forward T.J. Oshie on the injured reserve list. Oshie was injured in the team’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday and is listed week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

Center Nic Dowd left morning skate in pain after falling and favoring his left leg. His status for tonight’s game is still unknown.

Head coach Peter Laviolette mentioned Dowd’s injury is something lingering related to the lower-body injury that Dowd suffered from a rush by getting “tangled up” with Calgary Flames center Blake Coleman in overtime in Saturday’s 4-3 loss.

Leason could make his NHL debut tonight should Dowd not play, according to Laviolette, saying, “I’m not sure at this point. Obviously, him leaving the ice is not an ideal situation leaving the ice pre-game skate, so we’ll evaluate that. Leason is here if he can’t go, then Leason will go.”

Ilya Samsonov was the first goaltender off the ice this morning and is projected to start against the Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka is expected to start for Arizona.

Forward Tom Wilson will don the “A” tonight with Oshie and center Nicklas Backstrom (hip) on IR.

It’s Been A While, Arizona

The Capitals face the Coyotes tonight at Capital One Arena for the first time this season. This marks Washington’s first game against Arizona since February 15, 2020, and the first time the Coyotes have visited Capital One Arena since November 11, 2019.

The Capitals have earned points in four of their last five home games against the Coyotes (3-1-1). Captain Alex Ovechkin has 19 points (8g, 11a) in 20 career games against Arizona. The Capitals are currently on a seven-game point streak to start the season (4-0-3), tied for the second-longest season-starting streak in franchise history (nine games in 2020-21: 6-0-3; seven games in 2011-12: 7-0-0).

Doesn’t sound like Dowd is fully recovered. I hate seeing him push it, but he knows how important 4th line is.
