Left-wing Alex Ovechkin scored the 804th goal of his NHL career (regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs combined) in the Washington Capitals2-1 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Capital One Arena on Saturday, which propelled him past Mark Messier for fifth on the league’s all-time goal list.

After grabbing the puck out of a mob of players near the offensive blueline, the 36-year-old  took the puck to the dot, deked, and ripped it under the arm of Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Ovechkin has scored three goals through two games this season, tied for second in the NHL and one behind the league lead.

Ovechkin is currently 40 goals behind third on the list and could pass that milestone late this season. The marker was the 733rd regular-season goal.
