Washington Capitals defenseman Michal Kempny’s return from injury for the 2021-22 season was a welcome sight for all who have followed the blueliner’s struggle with injuries the last few seasons. With that in mind, it was no surprise that in the final preseason game before the start of the regular season, a hit to Kempny resulted in one of his teammates taking exception and tempers beginning to flare all around.
At the 19:03 mark of the second period in Capitals’ final preseason game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Flyers left wing Garrett Wilson delivered a hit to Kempny along the sideboards. Taking exception to the hit, Oshie dropped the gloves with the 6’3″ Wilson.
Both players were assessed matching, five-minute majors for fighting as the game headed into the second intermission.
Early in the third period, Caps defenseman Nick Jensen and Flyers forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel engaged in fisticuffs as well. As the two battled along the boards, tempers began to flare and the two dropped the mitts in a back-and-forth bout that eventually ended with both players in a heap on the ice.
The two teams have been testy with one another with the regular season just days away, with physicality seemingly the name of the game for both teams.
