The Washington Capitals released their roster for Wednesday night’s preseason game against the New Jersey Devils. As was the case for the first preseason game against the Bruins on Sunday night, Wednesday night’s roster is packed with Capitals prospects.
In total, 13 players selected by Washington in the NHL draft are in the lineup for Washington on Wednesday, including 2019 third round draft pick Aliaksei Protas. Protas began the 2020-21 season on loan to Dinamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), where he recorded 18 points (10g, 8a) in 58 games.
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will make his preseason debut after he signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract on July 27. The deal will carry Ovechkin through 21 seasons with the Capitals.
Capitals forward Connor McMichael will appear in his second preseason game after skating 15:55 on Sunday against the Boston Bruins. McMichael made his NHL and Capitals debut during the 2020-21 season on Jan. 24 vs. Buffalo.
Axel Jonsson-Fjallby will make his 2021-22 preseason debut Wednesday night against New Jersey. Jonsson-Fjallby registered a career best 0.48 points per game rate in 2020-21, recording 15 points (10g, 5a) in 31 games.
Hendrix Lapierre recorded two assists in his preseason debut Sunday night against the Boston Bruins. That marked the second-straight preseason that the Capitals have had a rookie debut in the opening game and record a multi-point game. During the 2019-20 season, Aliaksei Protas recorded three points (1g, 2a) in a 4-3 win on Sept. 16, 2019 against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Alex Alexeyev is expected to compete for a spot on the Capitals this season. The Capitals first round pick, 31st overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft began the 2020-21 season on loan to Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
Puck drop for Caps-Devils is set for 7:00 PM.
