Former Washington Capital Jakub Vrana Off To Rough Start In Detroit

Former Washington Capital Jakub Vrana lasted only a few shifts at his first day of training camp with the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Vrana joined the Red Wings camp on Saturday, two days after the start of their training camp. He arrived in Detroit on Friday after being held up in the Czech Republic because of visa issues. The Wings started a six-day camp on Thursday.

Things went from bad to worse for Vrána on his first day at camp. He would injure his shoulder 10 minutes after taking the ice.

“Jakub hurt his shoulder within the first 10 minutes of practice,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “He’ll be re-evaluated and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Blashill said he spoke briefly with Vrana prior to practice, but also reiterated in his post practice media availability that expectations remain high for Vrana this season.

“We didn’t have a chance to meet in person yet,” Blashill said. “I did talk to him quick this morning. But what I did talk to him about a season ago when he got traded to us is, there’s real opportunity and with that comes responsibility. We can’t afford for him to be a passenger, who does it right some nights and some nights doesn’t and somebody else carries the mail. We need him to be one of our drivers. He seemed to be excited about embracing that opportunity.”

Vrana, 25, was acquired by the Red Wings at the trade deadline as part of the deal that sent Anthony Mantha to the Capitals and also gave the Wings a first- and second-round draft pick.

Now lets see what Mantha does. Hopefully he is in for a big year now with full training camp and knowing the room better.
