After a somewhat normal feel to the offseason, the 2021-22 NHL season is right around the corner, with members of the Washington Capitals returning to MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia, to begin skating and prepping for the upcoming campaign. While the NHL season is yet to commence, another occupant of the facility begins their season on September 11, and had some help from the pros getting the 2021-22 season started.
The Capitals Hockey Academy is a Tier-II youth travel hockey team which plays and is based at MedStar. The team’s season begins on September 11, 2021 and two members of the Capitals, Center Nicklas Backstrom and Right Wing Tom Wilson, as well as radio personality Elliot Segal, helped wish the team well before puck drop on Saturday.
Each recorded their own well wishes to the Academy, who open the season at home.
The Academy team, which began play in the 2012-13 season, and whose principles are stated as being “rooted in the principles of USA Hockey’s American Development Model and takes great pride in the growth of our youth players both on and off the ice.”, have two games open to to the general public (with prior RSVPS), however crowd sizes are limited to 1,000 spectators. In addition, the public can enter a raffle to benefit So Kids Can Foundation, (co-founded by Segal and former Capitals defenseman Mike Green in 2008) which helps improve the lives of youth in local communities, to win autographed Capitals memorabilia.
