‘Sportsbook Review’ Projects Goal Totals For Alex Ovechkin Over The Next Five Seasons

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin currently sits 6th on the NHL’s all-time goals scored list with 730 career goals. Ovechkin inked a new deal at the end of July, giving him at least five more seasons to break Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals.

Sportsbook Review has released their projection for goals scored by Ovechkin over the course of his new contract. Here are their goalscoring projections for him over the next five years:

  • 2021: 45
  • 2022: 39
  • 2023: 37
  • 2024: 31
  • 2025: 28
  • Total: 180

Their projection gives Ovechkin a total of 910 NHL goals by the time his current contract is up. The sportsbetting site notes there is a lot to factor into this, such as if Ovechkin is short of the record by any less than 15-20 goals after his five years are up, will he stick around to try beat the record? They think he will. So do we.

Sportsbook Review also sees a scenario where Ovechkin could possibly play for another six or seven seasons, which would mean he could end with something like 950 career goals. Either way, unless Ovechkin suffers a serious long-term injury, they can see him beating “The Great Ones” all time NHL record. So do we.

The front end (years one and two) may be a little high, but I too see Ovi signing a two-year extension if he is anywhere near the record. He can fire power play one timers for the next decade if he wants to. He wants the record and will not stop until he gets it.

  2. Scottlew73 says:

If Ovie wants to break “TOTAL” goal record he will have to play more years!! 894 is the NHL record, don’t forget (1) season of WHA scoring (3 goals with Indy Racers & (43) with Edmonton oilers ),that would make total of 940 for him to have “ALL-TIME” record.

  3. Diane Doyle says:

If he can keep up with the productivity of Johnny Bucyk at a comparable age, he can get the record.

  4. hockeydruid says:

He gets to 895 and walks off the ice, into the roceod books adn into the lockerroom and heads back to Russia.
