On Sunday Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and former Washington Capitals forward Ilya Kovalchuk conducted a training session for youth hockey players in Tula, Russia. (more here.) On Tuesday Capitals’ goaltender Ilya Samsonov held his own training session for youth hockey players at the Metallurg children’s arena in Magnitogorsk, Russia.
Several dozen local goalkeepers gathered at the arena. The oldest are playing in the Junior Hockey League, preparing for a major step in their careers. The youngest ones are just taking their first steps in their goalkeeper career path.
Samsonov, rocking a Capitals sweatshirt and Washington Wizards hat at today’s training session, was a graduate of the Metallurg school and winner of the Gagarin Cup as part of the Magnitogorsk team in 2016. (More here.)

Samsonov will be returning to DC in a few weeks to begin preparing for the 2021-22 NHL season. The Capitals open their 2021-22 campaign against the New York Rangers on Wednesday, October 13.
