In preparation for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers next week in Slovakia, the Belarussian national team played two exhibition games against Barys Nur-Sultan, a KHL team in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, on August 19 and on August 21. Both games took place in Minsk, home of Dynamo Minsk of the KHL. Capitals prospect Aliaksei Protas recorded a goal, an assist and converted in a shootout in the two exhibition games.

On Friday, August 19, Team Belarus beat Barys Nur-Sultan, 2-1. Protas (#12) assisted on the first goal of the game, scored by Yegor Sharangovich, who plays for the New Jersey Devils. The goal was scored just past the midpoint of the first period. Protas would also convert in the shootout at the end of the game.

Protas was interviewed by after the first period. He said, “A good start, we had a great start. We started actively, but our team is a little hard – we haven’t played for a long time. If the guys in their clubs played some friendly matches, then we just practiced, it’s nice to return to the rhythm of the game, now everything is fine.”

Protas also spoke about the chemistry between he and his linemates, Yegor Sharangovich and Yevgeny Oksentyuk, saying, “We just open up to each other, play for each other, no one regrets the passes, and this is the result.  It’s nice to play with everyone. We have one big team, a good team, a great atmosphere.” The full interview can be found here.

The game on August 21 ended in a 4-4 tie. Protas scored the team’s second goal five minutes into the period to tie the game 2-2.

Game story is here.

At the beginning of next week, the Belarusian national team will travel to Slovakia, where they will continue to prepare for the start of the tournament. Austria, Poland, Belarus and Slovakia (Martin Fehervary is on their team) will compete in the tournament from August 26-29, with the winner getting a ticket to the 2022 Olympics.

I dont see them play much but I see Protas and Connor M along with Brett L playing for the Caps in the future… Not sure how good they will be.

There is something about this kid that screams “legit.” Who’s a comparable? I’m going to go way out of left field and say Romolu Lukaku. Big body, super smart, good vision, makes quick reads and acts decisively. You do have to play to his strengths but he can succeed. No hockey player should play for Belarus as long as Lukashenko is still in power.
