Wednesday night marked the beginning of an era for the league’s newest franchise. The Kraken selected players during the NHL Expansion Draft in Seattle, forming the roster for their inaugural season this fall. Here were the scenes from Seatown.

The city got in the mood as head coach Dave Hakstol raised a Kraken flag on the Space Needle this morning:

Fans watched the action from boats on Lake Union:

To no surprise, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman received boos from attending fans:

The Kraken…or should I say the octopus announced the team’s third pick of the evening, defenseman Dennis Cholowski from the Detroit Red Wings, in an interesting fashion:

Former Florida Panthers goaltender Chris Driedger was Seattle’s fourth pick and the first player to don the Kraken sweater:

Seattle’s own and rapper Macklemore hyped the crowd and announced the sixth pick, netminder Joey Daccord from the Ottawa Senators:

Via video message from Tokyo, WNBA’s Sue Bird (point guard for the Seattle Storm) helped with the announcement of the Kraken’s twelfth pick, forward Jordan Eberle from the New York Islanders, her hometown team:

Meanwhile, we have our first look at the Kraken away jerseys:

The date has been set! The Kraken’s home opener will be on Saturday, October 23 against the Vancouver Canucks. They will play on the road for the first two weeks of the season while Climate Pledge Arena is being finished.

Eberle expressed his excitement to be a part of the Kraken and his readiness to “get some wins here”:
