Class of 2021: Captain Graduates From America’s VetDogs

Graduation season is still underway as students are moving their tassels from right to left and starting a new chapter in their life. Starting that new chapter is Captain, the Washington Capitals team dog and former service dog in training, who completed training camp and graduated from America’s VetDogs on Sunday.

Donning a graduation cap and “diploma” bone, Captain updated us that he graduated from AVD in Smithtown, New York, and passed “with flying colors.”

He will be placed with a veteran or first responder with disabilities now that he is an official service dog.

Fans were introduced to Captain during the Rock the Red Carpet event on October 5, 2019, prior to the Capitals’ home opener against the Carolina Hurricanes, making his first appearance with captain Alex Ovechkin and attending his first game that evening. He was with the Capitals for seventeen months as a part of his training to become a service dog. Captain attended his final Capitals game as a member of the team on February 20.

From all of us here at NoVa Caps, congratulations on the major accomplishment, Captain! Best of luck to the goodest boy!

Congrats Captain. My sister has benefited from three service dogs over the years and I know just how hard you had to work to achieve this. Well done.

Somewhat sad news from the Lightning and Southeastern Guide Dogs. Bolt was halfway through training and doing well when the vet discovered he had early cataracts. With the potential visual disability, he had to drop out of the program. He has been adopted and is enjoying life but unlike Captain, he will not be able to be a service dog.
