The headquarters of the Russian national team announced on Tuesday that Washington Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov will not play for the national team at the 2021 World Championship, currently underway in Riga, Latvia. It was originally announced on Monday that Samsonov and Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov would join the Russian National team in the coming days to compete in the World Championship.
The report stated that the Capitals are not allowing Samsonov to participate in the World Championship due to medical reasons. He will undergo a two-week rehabilitation with the Capitals.
Dmitry Orlov and Vladimir Tarasenko will arrive at the location of the national team in Riga on May 26, according to the Russian Hockey Federation.
Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom will not participate in the 2021 IIHF World Championship. Backstrom was invited to join Team Sweden earlier in the day on Monday. The report stated the reason Backstrom declined to join Team Sweden was because he was dealing with a “troubled hip.”
The Russian Hockey Federation announced on Monday that Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will not participate in the 2o21 IIHF World Championships, currently underway in Riga, Latvia (May 21 to June 6), due to injury.
