Alex Ovechkin Will Not Participate In 2021 World Championship Due To Injury, Dmitry Orlov and Ilya Samsonov Will Join Russian National Team In Latvia

The Russian Hockey Federation announced on Monday that Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will not participate in the 2o21 IIHF World Championships, currently underway in Riga, Latvia (May 21 to June 6), due to injury.

Ovechkin missed seven games in an eight-game stretch from April 24 to May 8 for a “lower body injury” he sustained in a game against the New York Islanders on April 22.

Ovechkin is in the last year of his 13-year, $124 million contract and is eligible to become a free agent after the season. When asked about the progress on a new deal with the Capitals following Sunday night’s loss to the Bruins, Ovechkin declined to comment.

The Russian Hockey Federation also announced on Monday that Capitals’ defenseman Dmitry Orlov and Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov will join the Russian National team in Latvia.

Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov is ineligible to participate in Russian National team activities until 2023, after receiving a four-year ban by the Federation when he tested positive for cocaine in 2019.

According to the Swedish media outlet Sportbladet, Capitals forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Carl Hagelin have received texts from Team Sweden’s captain, inquiring about their interest in joining the Swedish National team for the World Championship. The report said that their has been no response, as of yet, from Backstrom and Hagelin.

When asked about team injuries following Sunday night’s 3-1 loss to the Bruins, Backstrom said he thinks all teams are banged up at this time of year, but that’s not an excuse.

Capitals defensive prospect Tobias Geisser (Swiss) and forward prospect Aliaksei Protas (Belarus) are the only Capitals prospects currently playing in the 2021 World Championship.

I figure Ovi must be injured pretty badly if he doesn’t play for Team Russia. Given that the rule is for Russian hockey players, when the National Team calls, you say, “Da!”
