Nicklas Backstrom On Capitals’ 3-1 Series Deficit: “Tough Situation. Tough Spot. But Something We’ve Been Through Before.”

After losing 4-1 to the Boston Bruins in Game 4 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoff first-round series, Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom told the media that the message coming from the leadership group is “Tough situation. Tough spot. But [this is] something [that] we’ve been through before. … Just got to take one shift, one game at a time. … We have to believe in the locker room [and] go from there.”

Following posting just 20 shots in Game 4, Backstrom thought that the Capitals were “not good enough. We need to generate more offensive chances. We have to move around more and create those chances. … They’re blocking a lot of shots, so we need to make it harder for them to defend.”

“It’s disappointing and [frustrating] as well but at the same time, it’s not over. We just have to regroup and go home,” the 34-year-old said. “Hopefully, we can go home and have a good meeting tomorrow and discuss what we can do better.” He added that areas of focus include special teams and “a little bit of everything. Somehow we need to gain our confidence back here.”

On getting their mindset ready for facing elimination in Game 5 at Capital One Arena on Sunday (7 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington locally, USA nationally), Backstrom noted that “We have to want it. … We have to be mentally ready.” He felt that Game 4 was the Capitals’ worst game of the series.

Regarding the team’s one-for-seven performance on the power play on Friday, Backstrom said “I feel like we have to come up with something there.” He credited the Bruins for coming up with an answer and blocking shots well.
