Game 2 Preview: Capitals Look to Continue First Round Series Lead Against Bruins on Monday

The Washington Capitals host the Boston Bruins in Game 2 of the first round in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday (7:30 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington, and NBCSN). The Capitals lead the series 1-0 after pulling out a 3-2 overtime victory in Saturday’s playoff opener.

Bruins

Goal Leaders: Forwards Nick Ritchie (1) and Jake DeBrusk (1)

Assist Leaders: Center Curtis Lazar (1), forward David Pastrnak (1), and defenseman Charlie McAvoy (1)

Goaltender: Tuukka Rask is likely to be in net for Boston. The 34-year-old made 29 saves in Saturday’s overtime loss. He holds a .906 save percentage and 2.78 goals-against average.

Essential Notes: The Bruins will be eager to bounce back in the second game of the best-of-seven series and hopefully generate more offensive production, according to head coach Bruce Cassidy. “As the series goes on, I think, typically, teams should get better and I expect that to be the case for us,” Cassidy said after Bruins practice on Sunday. “We’re going to need to, especially in their building.” Defenseman Jeremy Lauzon took a maintenance day after blocking a shot with his hand in Game 1. Whether he draws into the lineup for Game 2 will be determined on Monday.

Capitals

Goal Leaders: Forward Tom Wilson (1), center Nic Dowd (1), and defenseman Brenden Dillon (1)

Assist Leader: Forward T.J. Oshie (2)

Point Leaders: Wilson (2) and Oshie (2)

Goaltenders: Craig Anderson is likely to be in net for Washington. The 39-year-old made 21 saves in Saturday’s win. He holds a .955 save percentage and 1.16 goals-against average.

Essential Notes: Center Evgeny Kuznetsov was removed from the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list as of 5 PM on Sunday. Goaltender Ilya Samsonov came off the list Saturday evening and both players took the ice during Sunday’s optional practice. A timeline for return is unclear as of now. Netminder Vitek Vanecek remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury. The Capitals recalled Zach Fucale from the AHL’s Hershey Bears earlier in the day as a potential backup to be in net.
