Ilya Samsonov Is On COVID-19 Protocol List

Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette met with the media following the team’s morning skate on Friday. In the call he said that both Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilya Samsonov are on the league’s COVID-19 protocol list.

It was announced earlier in the week that Evgeny Kuznetsov was added to the league’s COVID-19 protocol list, but the status of Ilya Samsonov was still unknown. Both were placed on the list in January for nearly a month. It was later reported that Samsonov tested positive for COVID-19.

Both players were benched for the game against the Rangers on May 3 for violating team rules. It was later announced that Kuznetsov was placed on the league’s COVID-19-protocol list, but less was known about Samsonov’s continued absence from the team.

While Samsonov was reported to have COVID-19 earlier in January, It is believed that league protocol still requires players to be added to the list if they come in close contact with a potential positive case, or if they violate prescribed testing protocols, although the specific reason both players were added to the list is still unknown at this time.
