Capitals’ Tom Wilson on Monday’s “Routine Hockey Scrum”: “You’re Taught To Stand Up For Your Goalie, So That’s What I Was Doing”

On Friday, Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson spoke to the media following morning skate. He discussed the aftermath and reactions since Monday’s game against the New York Rangers and reiterated that he is “good to go” for tonight’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers at Capital One Arena (7 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington, NHL Network).

“It’s been a crazy couple [of] days,” Wilson said about the aftermath of Monday’s 6-3 win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden that resulted in a $5,000 fine and backlash on social media. “The good thing about social media is you’re able to close it and go about your life…I’m sure it was pretty bad and obviously, there was a reaction that I saw a little bit of, but trying not to pay much attention to that.”

On that controversial play, Wilson didn’t believe “all of this would have blown up” over the week. He said it was a “routine hockey scrum.” “At a young age in hockey, you’re taught to stand up for your goalie, so that’s what I was doing,” Wilson said, adding that scrums can get “chaotic” with “lots of stuff going on.” He also said, “Nothing I say right now is going to change anybody’s opinion…they’ve already made that up and I just got to keep moving forward.”

Wilson explained a bit about the chaos in hockey scrums among the punches, sticks everywhere, and skate blades near faces. “I don’t think it’s fair to go back and say ‘Maybe I would have changed this’…it’s a hectic moment,” he said. Wilson “wasn’t aware” at first who was on his back, but “out of respect” for the players on the ice, he did not want to drop the gloves.

He called the wrestle a “crazy moment, but one that’s not rare to happen in a hockey game,” adding, “It happens. We’ve seen it in games since that night.” Wilson did reach out to Rangers forward Artemi Panarin, and is “glad” Panarin is doing well.

“I’m good to go tonight,” Wilson said. He participated in the team’s morning skate and will be able to play on Friday. Wilson suffered an upper-body injury during Wednesday’s crazy 4-2 win over New York at MSG. “I’m fine. I’m feeling good.”

Yeah as former goalie,it’s fine your defending his honor, but bouncing guys head off the ice isn’t part of that! Couple light smacks on side of head due same thing! That’s why god gave goalies nice wide sticks & blockers,so we can handle “our” revenge our selves!!

Once Panarin goes after Tom, all bets are off. You can’t whimper after the fact.

Totally agree. He momma beared the bread man to the ice. If he was choking Tom I understand Toms reaction. Tom left his gloves on the whole time which was a sign that he was defending himself. I love how the Rangers took no credit for any of their actions and threw it on Tom. Buchnevich was the Corporate of the whole thing, and in the end was suspended for basically punching Mantha in the face because he is a punk. #messwithbullyougetthehorns
