Earlier this week renowned goaltender mask artist Dave Gunnarsson posted images of his latest creation for Capitals’ netminder, Ilya Samsonov. The mask was designed at the beginning of the year and has been worn by Samsonov since the beginning of the season.

On Tuesday Gunnarsson revealed a new, second design for Samsonov on his Instagram page. The new design includes the Capitol building and the number 30 on the right side of the mask and the Capitals text logo with a Weagle on top located on the left side of the mask.

Gunnarsson inscribed his Instagram post with the following:

“The second Caps mask of the season for my friend Ilya Samsonov is a direct continuation based on his first⭐️😊🇷🇺. Same layout and style, but this time created with a white base color. I just love to create these storyteller designs and work with every detail📘👀🔍. It is created as a hybrid, on a distance it has a touch of retro feelings with the crisp lines, and it is mixed with action packed 3-D FX in vintage style. Thanks Ilya for the paint ride! 🙏🏻😊 @samsonov_30 @capitals #DaveArtFamily @nhl #DaveArtFamily #DaveArtTheCradleOfCreativity @proschoicemask”

Gunnarsson also released a close-up video of Samsonov’s new mask.

Gunnarsson has been working with Ilya Samsonov since Samsonov began playing in the United States, including his time with the Hershey Bears. Samsonov has yet to wear the new Capitals mask in any games this season.

Gunnarsson is the creative mind behind goalie mask designs for numerous Washington Capitals and Hershey Bears goaltenders over the years. A few examples are herehere and here.
